This mammoth of a castle is a historical treasure waiting to be explored and this history buff LOVED it! Here's why we think you should add it to your Danish travel itinerary: ☑️ Rich History: This impressive castle has witnessed centuries of Danish History, from medieval times to modern Denmark. The exhibits offer an enlightening education into the past of the region, including its role in the Schleswig Wars and its impact on Danish identity. ☑️ Impressive Views: Commanding the shore of the beautiful Als fjord, the castle provides spectacular views of the surrounding seascape. ☑️ Stunning Architecture: Marvel at the well-preserved Medieval and Renaissance architectural features that make Sønderborg Slot a true gem. ☑️ Cultural Experiences: Immerse yourself in the local culture with the many exhibitions, events and guided tours, that shed light on the castle's past and the heritage of the region of Sønderjylland. Whether you're a history enthusiast like me, a castle lover or just looking for a memorable experience, Sønderborg Slot has something for everyone!

This has so much to see. Describing so many periods of the Southern Jutland region. The wars between Prussia and Denmark take up a lot of the exhibition space, but that is a part of the history of this region. The castle itself is very interesting, but I guess Europeans are used to having history all around them. As such, they did not have a lot of information on that. They are improving their English exhibitions. Most of the displays are in Danish or Danish and German. More and more seems to be including English. .

Very friendly staff member at the ticket office who gave me a detailed rundown of the museum and it's exhibitions. The museum itself is interesting and well made, I loved the temporary exhibition on World War 1, the short videos with reenactments of actual experiencs soldiers had in the trenches nearly moved me to tears. My only complaint is that a lot of the exhibition (especially the temporary one) is in Danish only, which is a pity since there are a lot of Germans and non-danish speakers in general visiting

I have been to this sight twice now in total, once in 2019 with the family and now in 2021 also once, but with a friend. Both times I liked it very much. You really get the history of Denmark and of the castle and Sønderborg itself. If you are in the area and are looking for a nice trip, I recommend this enormously. It is very affordable for what you get, and nowadays it also has a little restaurant. This was not yet the case in 2019, but now it is in 2021. Recommended.

Plentiful of danish history from the earliest days of the Sønderborg Castles origin to world war two and the late 70s. Unfortunately the facade was under renovation at the time and some of the exhibition was closed of. An audio tour of the museum would be wonderful as there is a lot of tekst and some times very small to read. All in all a very good tour.
