Alexandria Zoo was a deeply disappointing experience, and I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone who genuinely cares about animals.
The variety of animals is quite small, and those present are not kept in the best conditions. Their enclosures lack even the most basic enrichment necessary for a healthy, stimulating environment. Many animals are housed in small, concrete spaces that resemble jail cells more than proper habitats.
The level of neglect is shocking. Litter was scattered throughout the zoo, even inside enclosures. In the hippopotamus enclosure, I saw crisp packets and empty bottles floating in the water—something that should never be allowed in a place responsible for animal care.
Beyond neglect, there are signs of potential animal mistreatment for visitor entertainment. The ostrich appeared to have one talon removed from each foot, likely to prevent kicking. Staff were also allowing children to sit on the ostrich for photos—an unethical and distressing practice.
The lion cub available for pictures seemed suspiciously docile, possibly sedated. While I can’t confirm this with certainty, it was unsettling to see a young lion sitting motionless on visitors' laps for extended periods. Other animals were subjected to similar distressing conditions: baby crocodiles had their mouths taped shut all day for photo ops, and numerous parrots had their wings clipped to prevent them from flying away.
The entire zoo felt like it prioritized profit over proper animal care. Enclosures were dirty, lacked space, and showed no effort to mimic the animals’ natural habitats. While I understand that creating the perfect environment in captivity is difficult, it was clear that no effort was being made at all.
Outside of the animal welfare issues, the overall experience was chaotic. Children were treating the zoo like a playground, bringing footballs, bikes, and scooters, making it difficult to walk around without dodging flying balls. In my three hours there, I witnessed two people getting hit because they weren’t paying attention. The fact that this was happening when there’s a giant park right next to the zoo made it even more frustrating.
Zoos should be places of education, conservation, and proper animal care, but Alexandria Zoo fails in every aspect. Until they renovate, implement better welfare standards, and enforce basic rules, I strongly advise...
Read moreWow I very seldom give a bad review but this was a bad experience. Firstly if you a foreigner you have to pay extra but that didn't bother me as it was inexpensive only 20 EGP per person. We were pointed down towards where the monkeys were after we were given a sales pitch for photographs with several animals. We said no as we only wanted to walk around the zoo in peace and look at some of the animals. When we arrived at the monkeys we were harassed the man wanted us to feed the monkeys and began giving fruit to my partner. So my partner gave the monkey some fruit then the man started shouting for money so to get him to shut up we gave him 20 EGP but he wanted more. This put us off and we could only take photos of animals that did not have these stupid men outside demanding money. If you do go here avoid taking photographs if you are a white tourist you will be harassed all round the zoo until you get a good distance out of the exit gate. If you visit the lions be in for a shock there is a lion in here who is skin and bone it's like nothing I've seen before. If you are sensitive to the treatment of large cats in captivity please do not visit the lion and tigers we...
Read moreThe Alexandria Zoo in Egypt is a popular attraction for visitors of all ages. The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals, including lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, and many more.
Visitors to the zoo can expect to have a fun and educational experience. The zoo is well-maintained and clean, and the animals appear to be well-cared for. There are also several interactive exhibits and activities throughout the zoo, such as feeding stations and animal shows.
One of the highlights of the Alexandria Zoo is the opportunity to see rare and endangered species up close. The zoo is home to several species that are not commonly found in other zoos, such as the Egyptian gazelle and the Nubian ibex.
However, some visitors may have concerns about the size of the enclosures for some of the animals, particularly the larger mammals. Additionally, the zoo can get quite crowded during peak hours and on weekends, which may make it difficult to see all of the animals.
Overall, the Alexandria Zoo offers a unique and enjoyable experience for animal lovers and families...
