Small but very nice and interesting The Imhotep Museum is a modern museum located at Saqqara, near the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser. It was inaugurated in 2006 and is named after Imhotep, the legendary architect, high priest, and physician who designed the Step Pyramid, the world’s first monumental stone structure. The museum showcases a rich collection of artifacts from Saqqara, highlighting the site’s historical and archaeological significance.
The museum consists of several halls displaying statues, reliefs, tools, pottery, sarcophagi, and other artifacts discovered in Saqqara. One of the most remarkable exhibits is a colossal statue of King Djoser, which was once placed in his pyramid complex. Visitors can also see beautifully decorated Old Kingdom tomb reliefs, elaborately carved canopic jars, and a well-preserved wooden coffin from the Middle Kingdom.
Among the museum’s most fascinating exhibits are the original stone fragments from the Step Pyramid’s complex, which give insight into the construction techniques pioneered by Imhotep. There is also a section dedicated to archaeological discoveries made by Jean-Philippe Lauer, the French Egyptologist who spent decades excavating and restoring Saqqara.
The Imhotep Museum provides an in-depth understanding of Saqqara’s vast history, from the Old Kingdom to the Late Period, offering visitors a close-up view of artifacts that might otherwise be inaccessible in the vast necropolis. It serves as a tribute to Imhotep’s genius and remains an essential stop for anyone exploring the treasures of...

Very little is known of Imhotep as a historical figure, but in the 3,000 years following his death, he was gradually glorified and deified.
Traditions from long after Imhotep's death treated him as a great author of wisdom texts[3] and especially as a physician.[No text from his lifetime mentions these capacities and no text mentions his name in the first 1,200 years following his death.Apart from the three short contemporary inscriptions that establish him as chancellor to the Pharaoh, the first text to reference Imhotep dates to the time of Amenhotep III (c. 1391–1353 BCE). It is addressed to the owner of a tomb, and reads:
The wab-priest may give offerings to your ka. The wab-priests may stretch to you their arms with libations on the soil, as it is done for Imhotep with the remains of...
