We arrived by SUV for a 3-day trip around Saaremaa Island and this lighthouse was one of the first places to visit for us. The road to it is not close, but picturesque, so the time of the trip will fly by: several huge wind generators that will greatly impress children, approaching the lighthouse you see rare cute houses and small farms that look fabulous on the edge of the forest. We arrived at the lighthouse parking lot, next to it are several low buildings, apparently restaurants (with great service, great tasty local fresh fish dishes and fresh lemonades), cafes, boat (and even helicopter!) rentals. We went to the lighthouse. In front of it is a building: a ticket office/museum, where a cool guy sits. We quickly walked through the museum, where they show and tell about different lanterns and topics related to the sea and lighthouses. But since we arrived almost at closing time, we quickly hurried to the lighthouse itself. The lighthouse is built of reinforced concrete, which indicates that it was built relatively recently (1960?). But that doesn't make it any less valuable! After a few minutes of steep climbing, we found ourselves at the top. As with any lighthouse, there's a great view and a strong wind, so take care of your things, otherwise they'll fly away! My phone was almost snatched out of my hands. Then we went down and walked to the end of the cape, where it's also beautiful and atmospheric. Be sure to visit this place if you've come to travel...

The first lighthouse on the Sõrve Peninsula was built in 1646. The original structure of the lighthouse was wooden, however the structure was replaced with stone in 1650, and designed by Heinrich Stegeling. The lighthouse was under private possession until 1737, when the lighthouse was managed by the state. The rectangular structure of the lighthouse was reconstructed in 1770, and built higher in 1807. Another reconstruction occurred in 1863, when the lighthouse (at a height of 35 metres) was fitted with catoptric apparatus. The lighthouse had survived World War I, however its wooden interior was damaged by fire. During World War II, the whole structure was destroyed in the year of 1944. The temporary wooden octagonal structure was built in 1949, which was used up until 1960, when it was replaced by the current reinforced concrete...

The lighthouse is beautiful, but to our disappointment it's open just during the summer season. Anyway, the surrounding is very beautiful, you can get a nice walk here and even spot some seals like we did 🦭
