Going up to the Mount Entoto offers a great view above the city and it is quite funny and possible without expensive taxis: Take a minibus to Arat Kilo and change there for the minibus up to Shiromeda. In Shiromeda, ask the people and find a connection to „Gusqua“. In my case, this was a very old Toyota with a box on his back (even for more passengers). This “car” brought me up to Gusqua, where I found another one of this kind to climb the hill and survive the serpentines up to the Entoto Mariam Church (St. Mary Church). Actually, going like this is quite cheap (between 2 and 5 Birr for each part in 2013) and the contract drivers were so pushy that I tried to avoid them. At the Church up there is no view, but if you like to walk a bit, take your time and go back the street and walk down, back to Gusqua, which allows you to enjoy the spectacular view...

Entoto Maryam church, at Mount Entoto, is the second oldest Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Addis Ababa. At the churche's compound, you can visit a museum which displays a number of artifacts related with the churche's foundation and other old historical objects which belonged to Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu. Once at Entoto Maryam Church, don't leave without visiting the grass roofed palace of Emperor Menelik II. It was from this palace that Menelik II marched to the Battle of Adwa to defeat invading Italians in 1896.

Generally, Entoto Maryam is a nice place to visit in...

This is the first church built in Addis Ababa, by the famous king Minilik the second. Here you will see the palace and the beauty of view of Addis Ababa from the top. Very quite and excellent place to concentrate on your self. You can get a priest to help you solve some issues going on in your life. You can easily concentrate on your prayer. Very nice church for the Ethiopian orthodox religion. Still traditional way of worshipping God....

The weather literally clouded my overall experience here but it was really nice to have such a wonderful and engaging tour guide to show me around the place. He was genuinely interested in making my visit a pleasant event and I appreciated how detailed his explanations of the exhibits were. The view of Addis Ababa was obscured by clouds but this is still a magical place to visit any time of year.

Visited but stayed outside. Walked to the church from the outskirts of the city below (parked near the US Embassy). The walk was definitely worth it. There is a museum co-located on the church property. The church was built by Emperor Menelik II and is the burial place of Menelik and his wife Empress Taytu. Entrance to the museum requires a fee. (I didn’t visit the museum.)
