Bellísimo y triste cementerio. Considero que es una visita obligada al viajar a Normandía. Recordar en agradecimiento, a los soldados que perdieron la vida en estas playas. MUY JOVENES. El promedio de edad era de 22 años. El cementerio es muy bello, impecablemente conservado. Cuenta con todas las facilidades para una visita cómoda. Hay estacionamiento cercano, baños y acceso para sillas de ruedas. Así como un centro de visitantes, con exhibiciones alusivas a WW2. Todo invita a la reflexión. A agradecer lo que tenemos hoy y educar a las nuevas generaciones en los errores del pasado, para evitar repetirlos. El cementerio está ubicado muy cerca de Bayeux (25 minutos en auto) ó a 45 minutos de Caen. Considera 1.5 - 2 horas para recorrer la playa Omaha y el cementerio. Visitamos el 19 de abril de 2025 (al medio día) y había muy poca gente en el sitio. Muy agradable visita, que invita a reflexionar, recordar y agradecer. Bendiciones desde México a todas las familias de los países que perdieron a un ser querido en esta lucha durante la 2a guerra mundial - WW2.

Un posto suggestivo, che ti trasmette l’entità, il sacrificio e la grandezza di quello che è stato compiuto. Ho sempre sognato di vedere questi posti, non fosse altro che per toccare con mano e reapirare la storia che si è compiuta. Mantenere viva la memoria, è una cosa importantissima per le generazioni di adesso e quelle future e credo che tutti, almeno una volta nella vita, dovrebbero venirci. La bellezza dei prati verdi, costellati da così tante croci di marmo bianche, si scontra con la cruda realtà, quando leggi su ognuna di esse nome, cognome e data di morte di ragazzi giovanissimi, che avrebbero potuto vivere la vita che stiamo vivendo noi e che invece sono stati mandati in guerra. Passeggiando in quel posto non puoi non rimanere colpito dal silenzio, dalla pacatezza e dalla vastità di quello che ti trovi davanti. Un posto unico, magico anche per la posione logistica, sopra ad una scogliera con affaccio sul mare. Consigliatissimo!!!

Die Antwort von über 9.000 Kreuzen alleine an diesem Ort auf die Frage ob Faschismus je eine gute Idee war, oder bezogen auf heute es jemals sein kann - man findet sie hier - sprachlos - schweigend - bewegt von dem Gedanken wieviele Eltern, Kinder, Mütter... an diesen Stränden und im WWii generell ihre Liebsten verloren haben. Wie mutig doch die Alliierten zusammen standen um die Welt von der Hölle auf Erden zu befreien. Ein "at least once in a lifetime must see" Bilder davon sind deutlich weniger bewegend - das muss man vor Ort gespürt haben. Nie wieder Krieg! Stand together in Europe, USA and all over the world! In tiefer Dankbarkeit an all die jungen Helden!

De onmiskenbare Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial staat op de kliffen met uitzicht op Omaha Beach bij Colleville-sur-Mer. De site beslaat meer dan 170 acres en werd geopend in juli 1956. Tegenwoordig ontvangt de site meer dan een miljoen bezoekers per jaar.

Enkele belangrijke figuren… ➡️ 9.387 begrafenissen en 1.557 namen van vermisten op de Wall of the Missing

➡️ 9.238 kruizen en 149 Davidster-grafstenen

➡️ Er zijn graven van 304 onbekende soldaten - gemarkeerd met het opschrift 'Hier rust in eervolle glorie een kameraad in wapens die alleen bekend is bij God'

➡️ Drie ontvangers van de Medal of Honor liggen hier

➡️ 45 sets broers zijn hier begraven, waaronder twee zonen van president Roosevelt - Theodore Roosevelt Jr (overleden in juli 1944) en Quentin Roosevelt (gedood in WO1 en herbegraven naast zijn broer in 1955)

➡️ De broers Preston en Robert Niland, de inspiratie voor de film Saving Private Ryan, zijn ook naast elkaar begraven

Absolutely stunning and meticulously maintained. The path moves from the visitor's center and presents you to the cemetery. I wish there was some sort of turnoff to allow you to catch your breath when first seeing the gravestones. It took me a full 10 minutes to be able to speak. There is a reason this is on so many bucket lists....
