Just a quick stroll from the American Cemetery you will find this network of bunkers. Sitting above Omaha Beach.

It was "home" to the Germans, shooting the Allies from the high ground. When you check some of these bunkers out, you will see why they were (sadly) so successful in killing so many Allies. They had a clear view of the beach and the ocean and the small gaps in the bunkers - where they shot from - were difficult to target for the Allies.

It's one of 14 bunker networks in the Omaha section. The Widerstandsnest 62 covered an area of a bit over 300m x 300m. And was manned by only 41 soldiers. But even so, they did massive damage to the allied troups from this position - as did many other Widerstandsnester in the Omaha Beach section.

Today there's not much left of these bunkers. Inside they are all empty, but when you walk (or crawl) inside these bunkers you still can get a glimpse of how and what it must have been. It's a strange feeling, being inside one of these bunkers. It's chilling. But from a historic point of view it's really interesting and the info plates all around the area give more insight.

It's easy to get to, free to visit. So it's really something you should check out. Given that you treat the whole place and area with a bit of respect. It's not a playground (but it seems to some visitors it is; which is sad).

A really eerie, creepy but important...

The carpark to the area is located beside the exit for the American Cemetary. You follow the path from the carpark to the area. There are a couple of monuments here as you walk towards the ocean. the first one is the monument for the First Infantry Division while the second one is for the Fifth Engineer Special Brigade. Both are quite different but have amazing views out into the ocean. There are a lot of bunkers hidden throughout the area, most of which you are able to walk through if you can find the entrance. we found one close to each monument. Be careful when you are walking off the path in case you fall into one of these entrances. The Fifth Engineer monument is on top of another bunker. There is a path to the side which leads tot he bunker entrance, It was a bit rainy when we were there so the bunkers had puddles everywhere but you were able to get in and explore to your hearts content. Make sure you have a flashlight to help navigate through the darker areas. It was a nice stop to see the...

WN-62 was manned by 27 members of the 716th Infantry Division and 13 members of Severloh's 352nd Division, whose task was to direct fire of the 10.5 cm artillery batteries located 5 kilometres inland at Houtteville. Defenses included two type H669 concrete casemates, one empty and the other with a 75mm artillery piece, a 50mm anti-tank gun, two 50mm mortars, a twin-barrelled MG 34 7.92mm machine gun on an anti-aircraft mount and two prewar Polish machine guns. Another 50 mm anti-tank gun covered the rear, and the perimeter was ringed by barbed wire and anti personnel mines. WN62 and WN61 did the most damaged to the troops landing on the beaches on the entirety of Omaha Beach. One of the busiest Normandy fortifications and pretty much ever trench is destroyed by by tourist climbing over it all day.

Very informative for getting an idea of how the German defences in the area were organised. One of the artillery bunkers still carries the marks of battle (shell marks on the front just above the gun opening and a hole in the wall at the back from a lucky shot that made it in). Also, the layout of the trenches connecting the different parts of the complex is still recognisable, which is very interesting. Shame most of the smaller pillboxes and shelters have been filled in, but I suppose that's unavoidable as it would be too labour intensive to keep every single part of the complex safely accessible for the public. Parking can be tricky if you drive a tall vehicle, as most parking areas have height restrictions.
