The Saint‑Mathieu lighthouse (or Saint Mathieu point) is in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in Brittany. Pointe Saint Mathieu is a small rocky promontory that stands between the beautiful inlets of the coast and the waves of the Atlantic crashing on the rocks. The Pointe Saint Mathieu lighthouse is one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the French coast and among the most powerful, its range exceeds 50km. The current lighthouse was built in 1835 and electrified in 1932. The Saint Mathieu lighthouse is open to the public in the summer, during the peak tourist periods. To reach the top, you will have to climb an internal staircase of 163 steps. Here nature, the sea and the wind are the protagonists, a place that I will not soon forget. A short distance from the Saint Mathieu lighthouse, almost overhanging the sea, stands another military structure used as a radar for the coastal navigation service. Near the Lighthouse there are the ruins of the abbey of Saint Mathieu. Near the abbey there is another small religious building still intact, it is the church of Notre Dame de Grâce. Finally, I recommend a walk along the coast following the path, as well as being able to admire the beautiful landscape you will still come across the World War II bunkers built by...

163 steps takes you to a fabulous panorama before you. Pointe Saint-Mathieu reveals its steep cliffs bathed by the Iroise Sea. On the horizon, you can see the Crozon peninsula, Pointe du Raz, the Molène archipelago, the island of Ouessant, and other lighthouses, such as the Kermorvan lighthouse, the Pierres Noires lighthouse, and even Ar Men on a clear day.
This tower, built in 1835 sits beside the ruins of an old abbey, is a landing lighthouse with a theoretical range of about 55 km. Located between Le Créac'h d'Ouessant and the lighthouse on the island of Sein, it indicates the Saint Mathieu point. These three major lights are the landings of the western tip...
Read moreA very interesting lighthouse. Special is here the close abby which was much earlier here. It is now ruined - stones were used for the tower. Please take a bit time. At weekends or holidays visitors need to wait until they can climb up. 136 stairs are a lot, but for worth. The scenary is outstanding. Parking is free or visit of the abby. Also walk around is an ootion and a small museum informs about the abby. The shown film is only in french. But I get a handout in my language as paper. That helps. Maybe come early in the morning, if you want...
