Vitré Castle — Attraction in Fougères-Vitré

There are dozens of upon dozens of famous chateaux in and around the Loire valley. All are very spectacular but if you want something which is a bit more real, a bit more rugged and possibly with a bit more history then the chateau and chateau forts that line the old Britany/France border might be worth a look. Top of many's list is Fougeres which is great but I personally prefer Vitre both as a town and as a fortification. Vitre has easy access to the TGV, lovely station mind, and this, and new investment in tourism has brought a more professional edge to the town. Incidently, I would recommend using the station multistory parking as it is easy to find, reasonible and access to the town is across a new bridge/causeway, which has lifts. Vitre does its best to be accessible but this is a ancient cobblestoned town and, strangely, the castle is at the top of the hill, so be warned! But....both the town and the Chateau are well worth the effort. It is not just the timbered shops and houses, the fascinating architecture but the way you are almost immersed in history. For those not so interested in the past, there is a wealth of restaurants and shops.......plus the odd bar/tabac.......We sort of stumbled on castle but it is signposted. We found it stunning, a real Disney castle, dominating the square, which also has cafe's and restaurants in which you can study the building....maybe over a glass of red. The Chateau is reasonable to entre and does have a small museum but the main attraction is the self guided tour which takes you all over the building......up and down and round many steps.....again be warned! The views especially, are well worth it but keep an eye on young children. We loved it because the castle does give you a realistic idea of the how castles work and how they transitioned from fortress to fortified residence. Possibly everyone's pictures really tell the story best. For those lost souls out there, Vitre is halfway down on the left hand in France, Ille et Vilaine Department, just off the A81. The D178 bends round the town like a ring road and the old town is well signposted. If in doubt head for the station. If you are travelling by train.........you are already in the right place. We found everyone very friendly and helpful but you will need your phrasebook....we found only a few locals speaking English except at the museum. This is only one of many fortifications along this ancient border worth looking at including, Poance, Angers,...

We only had the chance for a quick visit to the castle from the outside. On this years Road Trip through France we've seen lots of castles and fortresses. This here was another fine castle. Really has the looks of a fairy tale castle. Big and deep moat as well. A small drawbridge brings you across it where you could buy tickets for the visit. Looked really interesting and is something we will do the next time we come around.

But just from outside you can see the different parts and sections of the castle quite well. Even though the entrance itself is small, the gate and the attached twin towers are massive. A statement! Other tower all around the castle are impressive as well. It's just a fantastic piece of architecture and a sight to behold.
