Located 200 meters from Les Halles and the Church, the Village d'Art Guillaume-le-Conquérant is open to the public free of charge. You can visit it at leisure and meet artists, restorers, antique dealers and craftsmen. Former coaching inn located between Rouen and Caen by the chemin de la grève, the ensemble included exterior galleries to access the bedrooms, stables and its outbuildings. A few parts of buildings that are easy to discern in the Louis XIV court remain from this period. At the end of the 19th century, with the fashion for sea bathing, a wealthy clientele established itself and the inn experienced a period of splendor thanks to Monsieur Le Rémois. This exceptionally talented innkeeper assures his establishment an extensive reputation and receives numerous artistic, literary and political celebrities. A great lover of art, Le Rémois transformed the inn and had Norman buildings adorned with half-timbering and woodcarvings in a Medieval or Renaissance style. On the roofs, he installs ridges. He called on the archaeologist Lotin de Laval to reproduce casts of antique decorations. Collector, he installs authentic stone sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries in the three courtyards, sometimes from old churches or manors in the region. The Rémois celebrates the memory of William the Conqueror who, at Dives in 1066, constituted his fleet and regrouped his army for the Conquest of England. The pediment of the porch is engraved: “Hostellerie Guillaume Le Conquérant”. A fresco partially reproducing the Bayeux Tapestry is installed in the “Departure Room” which now houses the Tourist Office.

Always a great atmosphere. Municipality much more dynamic compared with the richer, yet dull Cabourg when it comes to partying. Very successful medieval festival, superb Saturday market (the most beautiful in the region), and regularly organized garage sales.
