The name Hennebont comes from Breton Hen Pont (or “Vieux Pont”) meaning “old bridge,” indicating the importance of a crossing over the Blavet river.

Originally, there was a motte féodale (a kind of early wooden/earth fortification) on the right bank of the Blavet.

In the middle of the 13ᵉ century, Jean I, Duke of Brittany (Jean le Roux) had that motte torn down (on the right bank) and built a more permanent fortified town (“ville close”) on the left bank. This included walls, towers, gates for defense. The defensive enclosure includes remparts (city walls), towers, fortified gates such as the Porte Broërec’h with its two towers.

Over time, parts of the fortifications were adapted for improvements in artillery (e.g. cannonières) especially in the 16ᵉ century.

1342: During the Breton War of Succession, Hennebont was besieged (including its fortified enclosure). One famous episode involves Jeanne de Flandre defending the town, including relief and counterattacks.

Over the years, the defensive walls lost military importance; parts were demolished in the 18ᵉ century as they...

A sprawling fortress placed to protect the town from invasion from the river. Half a kilometre of ramparts are accessible for free.
