Château de Montreuil-Bellay — Attraction in Saumur

This Chateau looks absolutely spectacular when you drive up and when you park. It’s a picture postcard French Chateau. We found parking easy and nearby. 12E to enter but keep your ticket and you get a discount to some other attractions in the area. We were given a guide folder in English to use during our visit. One suggestion would be to number the route and rooms so they correspond to the information booklet as we could not find what we were looking at on a couple of occasions which sort of spoiled the experience. We did give this hopefully useful feedback to the young ladies when we left. There were quite a few rooms in the towers which were very similar with some “interesting” paintings. The chateau rooms were really nice and well furnished. I just would have liked to see more eg the upstairs. 5* for outside 3* for inside. You get access to the Parish Church of Notre Dame Du Bellay. We really enjoyed this and the lady that was in there supervising that lives in England was superb with her knowledge and helpfulness. A bit expensive but a beautiful Chateau. No tours in Dutch or English. We did get a booklet explaining the rooms we visited In English. Our guide spoke French, Italian and Portuguese. And she was very keen to ask us if we understood everything, so very helpful! The Chateau still produces there own wine which I recommend you taste at the end of the tour (included in the price). But because all the signs on site where in French only, I give it 3 stars. If they would write there information in English also, I would have given it 4 stars. I'm a history fan so I know that not everything they tell you is true, but a very nice way to see how people in the upper classes lived...

This is a very charming Chateaux in the centre of Montreuil Bellay. You can visit the out gate area without paying and if you want a guided tour go through the imposing second gate. Château de Montreuil-Bellay is also the name of a premium wine made on the property.
