The Glienicker Brücke, located in Potsdam, is a historic bridge that played a key role in Cold War espionage. It's also the setting for the popular film "Bridge of Spies," starring Tom Hanks. The local guides have had the pleasure of taking many visitors to see this iconic bridge. As we did during a tour during a pre-pandemic summer. My family and I were inspired by the history of the bridge and the role it played during the Cold War. Our tour guide provided us with a wealth of information about the spies who were exchanged on the bridge and the tensions that existed between the East and West. In addition to its role in espionage, the Glienicker Brücke is also significant as it marks the location of the former German division. Visitors can still see the line of the "wall" and imagine the guards that stood watch over it. Overall, I would highly recommend visiting the Glienicker Brücke if you're interested in Cold War history or simply want to see a beautiful bridge. It's a must-see attraction in Potsdam that is steeped in history and provides a fascinating glimpse into the tensions and conflicts of the past.

Amazing bridge at the end of the tram line (Tram 93, terminus) in Potsdam, it spans the water border between Potsdam and Berlin, so was an important border when Berlin was divided. The bridge was damaged in the war and restored. It was used during the cold war to occasionally swap spies and featured in the Tom Hanks film, Bridge of spies. Lots of information boards on the bridge all about it’s history. Even if you are not interested in the history, its a nice walk over the water and you can watch people paddle boarding and going past on boats.

Have you seen the Bridge of Spies? Not the movie by Steven Spielberg staring Tom Hanks about the exchange of spies during the Cold War. I meant the actual bridge where the exchange of spies actually took place, the very same one from the movie. Say hello to the Glienicke Bridge. The very first exchange, the Powers-Abel exchange, become the major plot of the movie and was filmed here.

The Havel River is the border between East and West of Cold War Germany. I don't have the same cinematography skills as Steven Spielberg, so the Glienicke Bridge doesn't look the same without the night darkness and blinding flood lights. Speaking of which, time to rewatch the movie and see if I missed out any interesting locations...

Glienicker Brücke is the perfect place for a peaceful stroll, especially on a sunny day! ☀️ Surrounded by beautiful scenery, with the Havel River flowing beneath, it’s a fantastic spot to relax, take in the fresh air, and enjoy the moment. But beyond its beauty, this bridge holds a fascinating past! 🕵️‍♂️ During the Cold War, it became known as the “Bridge of Spies”, where secret agent exchanges took place between East and West. Standing here, you can almost feel the history woven into its structure. Today, it’s a symbol of connection, offering breathtaking views and a truly unique experience. Whether you’re a history lover, a photographer, or just someone looking for a pleasant walk, Glienicker Brücke is a...
