Came here on a July weekday afternoon with another adult (my mother in law) and my three children ages 5, 3, and 1.5. The parking lot is not far from the castle (it took us about 5 minutes walking at my 3yo's pace) and has port-a-potties nearby. Once you enter the castle grounds, you walk past the chapel (which was open to visit when we were there) and into the open air restaurant, which had food, ice cream, and souvenirs. The staff at the restaurant only spoke German but once we entered the castle, the staff there spoke wonderful English and even introduced us to the tour and explained the hand-chiseling of each sandstone room and demonstrated the depth of the well, as well as told us how to explore the underground tunnels, in wonderful English. The actual castle only took about 30 minutes to explore, with several furnished rooms to admire and several places with good views to take photos. We then explored the tunnels for about 10 minutes; they were dark and we had to use our phone flashlights to see safely, but the kids weren't scared. Just to warn you, it took about 5 minutes to even find the underground tunnels; just continue to follow the signs until you find the door by the catapult. Once we left the castle, we had ice cream at the restaurant, then visited the chapel, and were on our way. We then went to Drachenfels castle, which took much more time and was more adventurous but not as refined and grandiose as this castle, and it made for a wonderful afternoon. This castle took us overall about 1-1.5 hours, even including a snack mid-exploration and subsequent ice cream. I would have felt safe here with all 3 kids even without my mother-in-law, in case you're sight-seeing with small kids...
Read moreWhat a stunning & incredibly well-kept castle! The castle is absolutely beautiful inside and out, the garden is small but kept up well, the views are sweeping, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the food and espresso are delicious! We visited on a cold & rainy day, and the cafe area was heated with a heat lamp and a wood-burning fire, creating the perfect ambiance for a cozy meal. We hiked the nearby lakes afterward. All in all our family of 4 really enjoyed our day at Burg Berwartstein & I’d love to take extended family there when they visit us from the states. (We went in winter and there was not a guided tour, but rather a self-paced tour, which was...
Read moreEasy to get to. Parking is at the base of the castle and it's a very short walk up.
6 euros per adult. I think they also did tours, but since I don't speak any German we just went and walked through. You go up the stairs and head to the right. You will go all the way up to about 3/4 of the way up (the top of the tower was closed).
Then you make your way back down into the courtyard. Go into the garden and there is an entrance behind the catapult. It leads you back to the entrance but underground. They only had tea lights so turn your phone light on.
The restaurant was open when we went but we decided to eat somewhere closer to home.
I really...
