Masters' Houses — Attraction in Dessau

Really quite disappointing to me. I understand that the first two houses were rebuilt from the ground up (destroyed in WW2), but why the frosted glass in every window?

Also, only one house had any furnishings in it at all, the first two were completely bare (except for some panels with information and a few pictures). The furniture was apparently moved to the new Bauhaus museum, but leaving the houses bare and the windows frosted glass made them completely uninteresting to me.

The 2nd house had a large exhibit on Kurt Weill, a musician that was born in Dessau - it wasn't clear at all what his connection to the Bauhaus was - until we talked to the lady at the entrance: there is no connection whatsoever. So why fill the house with stuff on him? No other place to put it?

The closest we got to understanding how people lived here was a marketing film that Gropius had made that was being played on a monitor in the last house we visited.

Recommendation: have a look from the outside (for free) and save yourself the ticket...

Entworfen von Gropius wohnten hier die Meister - also die Professoren - des Bauhaus. Jeweils zwei teilten sich ein Doppelhaus. Kandinsky / Klee, Mucha / Schwemmer, Feininger / Moholy-Nagy. Der Große Meister selbst hatte ein Einzelhaus.

1945 wurden leider die Häuser Gropius und Moholy-Nagy zerstört. Der Rest wurde nach der Wende wieder sehr schön renoviert. Die Täterätä-Brüder waren ja erst genauso dagegen wie die Nazi-Ärsche, nahmen nach 1960 das alles zwar ins "Nationale Kulturerbe" auf, waren aber entweder nicht willens oder nicht in der Lage, die Häuser wieder herzurichten.

Während fast alle Wohnungen im Bauhaus Corporate-Design gehalten sind, haben wohl Klee und Kandinsky darauf bestanden, ihre Häuser nach ihrem Gusto zu gestalten. Macht's interessant. Allen Häusern gemein ist der Grundriss. Mit dem Atelier als größtem Raum der jeweiligen Wohnung.

Wir waren ja fast schon zu spät dran. Trotz der Beteuerung der Ticket-Schergin hat's für das Feininger Haus nicht mehr gereicht. In jedem Haus sind jetzt nämlich auch Ausstellungen. Von einem Herrn Maxy hab ich bis heute noch nichts gehört, bin aber relativ begeistert!
