Eltville Castle — Attraction in Eltville am Rhein

My family and I visited last weekend. Parking was difficult as you can leave your car in the town for only one hour at a time. At least it was free. You just need the little blue parking wheel.

The approach to the castle is very scenic and highlighted by the castle itself and the Church of Peter and Paul, which is just to the West, also a beautiful destination, but small and unimpressive compared to many of the cathedrals in the area.

Upon entering the grounds, you first cross a bridge that goes over a beautiful and elaborate garden. The flowers were blooming. They obviously keep this garden very well. Across the bridge, you enter a fairly large courtyard and you have to choose where to go first.

In the ground floor of the tower, a small gift shop sells trinkets, souvenirs and books about the castle and the area. For 3€ per adult, you can visit the rest of the tower. One set of spiral steps goes all the way to the top and on the various levels of the tower are different exhibitions. The entrance to each floor contained a brief explanation written in German, French and English.

On the first floor, there were painted walls and stained windows. The second floor prevented us entering due to a clear, locked glass door, but seeing inside, they had a painting of Gutenberg, who had been a courtier in the castle before he was famous, a printing press and other various artifacts. I have no idea whether any of this was authentic.

The third floor contained a small exhibit of several artifacts from the castle, the town and the surrounding area as well as some of the history of the area. All of this was in German, but we were able to decipher much of it and Google Translate is always available for what we can't understand. The fourth floor was the top and highlighted beautiful views, but the windows were infested with fruit flies, probably the only negative of the entire visit. It wasn't enough to change the rating I've given. If you want to see amazing views of the Rhine River and the surrounding town of Eltville, there are plenty of other windows in the castle in which to view them.

The rest of the castle grounds --I already mentioned the garden-- comprised of a dungeon under the gift shop, a small bridge and some various castle walls. There was a wine press outside the walls, next to the river.

The tower is the real interest, but the town is not far and highlighted by walking paths and biking paths and looks...

Located in the town of Eltville, very short walking distance from the Eltville bahnhof, you will will cobbled pathways leading up to the castle. The courtyard of the castle is adorned with beautiful floral decorations. Just a small walk through another gate from the courtyard, you will see its beautifully maintained gardens. Strolling through the gardens, I felt as if I had stepped into a fairytale. The well-manicured lawns, the serene fountains, and the fragrant flower beds all added to the magical ambiance of the place. I found myself spending hours simply wandering around, admiring the scenery and soaking in the tranquility. On its other exit, you will find yourself embraced by the lovely breeze from the Rhine river. Following the breeze you can take a stroll along the river side, where you can also taste their good wine.

Although I discovered it by chance, the city's charm has made me visit it 4 times at least. If you visit around June/July, you will be able to enjoy its wine fest and various other cultural programs the city holds.

Die Kurfürstliche Burg in Eltville am Rhein, auch bekannt als Eltviller Kurfürstliche Burg oder Kurfürstliche Burg zu Eltville, ist eine bedeutende historische Sehenswürdigkeit in der Stadt Eltville im Rheingau, Hessen.

Die Burg wurde in der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts, genauer gesagt zwischen 1330 und 1345, von Balduin von Luxemburg, dem Erzbischof und Kurfürsten von Trier, erbaut. Sie diente als Residenz und Verwaltungssitz der Trierer Kurfürsten, die zu dieser Zeit große Teile des Rheingaus beherrschten. Die strategische Lage am Rhein war von großer Bedeutung, da sie sowohl zur Verteidigung als auch zur Kontrolle des Schiffsverkehrs diente.

Unter Kurfürst Balduin erlebte die Burg eine Blütezeit und wurde weiter ausgebaut. Sie diente nicht nur als befestigter Herrschaftssitz, sondern auch als repräsentatives Gebäude. Die Anlage war von einer starken Mauer mit Wehrtürmen umgeben und besaß einen tiefen Burggraben.

Während des Dreißigjährigen Krieges wurde die Kurfürstliche Burg Eltville schwer beschädigt. Nach dem Krieg begann der Wiederaufbau, wobei die Burg ihre ursprüngliche Bedeutung als Festung verlor und mehr und mehr zu einem Verwaltungszentrum und Amtssitz wurde.

Im 19. Jahrhundert geriet die Burg zunehmend in Vergessenheit und wurde teilweise als Steinbruch genutzt. Erst in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts besann man sich auf den historischen Wert des Gebäudes und begann mit umfangreichen Restaurierungsmaßnahmen.

Heute ist die Kurfürstliche Burg Eltville ein bedeutendes Kulturdenkmal und ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel. Die Anlage beherbergt unter anderem das Stadtmuseum Eltville, das die Geschichte der Stadt und der Region dokumentiert. Zudem finden in der Burg regelmäßig kulturelle Veranstaltungen wie Konzerte, Ausstellungen und Feste statt. Ein besonderes Highlight ist der Burgturm, der einen herrlichen Blick über Eltville und den Rhein bietet.
