Munich's Haus on the Zugspitze — Attraction in Grainau

INFO FOR THE ALPINISTS

We ascended Zugspitze via Eisenzeit and were planning Jubigrat descend with an overnight stay booked 9 months in advance. We read DAV website carefully to plan the tour accordingly. However, the website info did not correspond the reality.

Overnight stay and restaurant are very separate and not connected activities of this hut. This means that the restaurant is open at 10-15h, whereas overnight accommodation is available from 17:30 till 8:00 (you should arrive by 17:30 and contact a person from the summit kiosk to check you in - the hut itself is closed, if you arrive too late, there is a chance your spot goes to someone without reservation searching for shelter - which is not a bad thing itself, but try to be on time 😉, or the kiosk employee might not be there if you‘re late). There is no any food available at the hut for the overnight stay (no minimalistic dinner of breakfast package promoted at the website), nor cooking facilities - you have to prepare accordingly. If you want to call the hut to inform it about late arrival, no one will pick up the phone because the hut is empty, which contradicts the regular DAV safety measures (also there was no any hut book) - what if the Alpinist guest is in trouble? As the website states, the sleeping facilities are situated in the basement and they are not heated, you have only one thin blanket per person - take warm clothes with you. There is no shoe room or drying room: all the equipment you have to take to the sleeping room or leave in the corridor. Among the good things: there is a decent phone connection and sockets everywhere, very civilised toilet + at least you don’t have to do cleaning as they do it for you.

To sum up: 1) the conditions are very much bearable, but the correct information is not communicated by DAV which makes is very hard to plan the mountains tours (time of arrival/departure, food/water options) - other overnight guests had the same questions as we did, 2) Münchnerhaus is promoted as a category 2 hut OR self service hut, but it is far from both - essentially, it is an expensive overbooked biwak which needs a reservation early in advance AND arrival strictly on time, 3) job of a hut keeper/owner is very respected, and it makes it a great experience when you stay at the hut run with love and professionalism - it is not about Münchnerhaus, despite a praising page about the hut keeper on the DAV website: here, you feel it every moment, how owners abandon and do not care at all about the hut on a top of Germany (they even outsource hut keeper duties to the friendly kiosk employee), and turn it into a mockery instead of...

Ich war mit meiner Wandergruppe leider sehr enttäuscht vom Münchner Haus.

Der hauptsächliche Grund dafür war die Verpflegung in der Hütte und der Umgang des Wirtes (hier der ältere), da dieser sehr kurz angebunden und recht unhöflich war. Der jüngere Wirt war wiederum das komplette Gegenteil, halt so wie man sich einen Hüttenwirt vorstellt.

Auch war die Verpflegung sehr enttäuschend für eine Hütte. Mir ist bewusst, dass die Versorgung mit Lebensmitten auf einer Hütte recht schwer und kostspielig ist, doch hatte ich hier das Gefühl "über den Tisch gezogen zu werden". Da dies nicht meine erste Wanderung war und ich auch schon in verschiedenen Hütten übernachtet habe, bin ich der Meinung, dass ich mir ein Urteil erlauben darf.

Denn nach einer 7-stündigen Wanderung gibt es nichts besseres als das Hütten Essen, doch hier wurde man mit einer recht mageren Portion Käsespätzle ("Bergsteigeressen" für 9 €) abgespeist, welche zwar lecker waren, aber nach unserer Einschätzung zu wenig. Beim sogenannten Bergsteigerfrühstück setze sich dies fort, hier gab es für 8 € = 2 Scheiben Brot, Salami, Käse, 2 kleine St. Butter und etwas Marmelade (erst auf Nachfrage). Das Brot war wahrscheinlich noch vom Discounter.

Auch war es nicht möglich nach 17 Uhr einen Kaffee (am Morgen gab es Filterkaffee) oder eine Heiße Schokolade zu bekommen, da die Maschine schon gereinigt war.

Von einer Preisliste war gar nichts in der Hütte zu sehen. Transparenz = nicht vorhanden.

Auch das Matratzenlager war enttäuschend. Mir ist bewusst das es hier nicht viel Platz gibt, doch gab es für einen Kollegen nur 2/5 einer Matratze (diese war schräg geschnitten). Bei den anderen Betten wurde bei der der Bezifferung einfach 1a und 3a hinzugefügt, um einen weiteren Schlafplatz zu generieren. Hier steht eindeutig der Profit im Vordergrund (ich verstehe, dass man auch Gewinn machen will, aber dies geht auch vernünftiger).

Für die Leute die ihre Wasserbehälter auffüllen wollen, empfehle ich dies bei der Knorrhütte zu tun. Denn im Münchner Haus muss man für 1 Liter Wasser stolze 1,50 € bezahlen.

Meine Empfehlung ist es, wenn möglich in der Knorrhütte zu schlafen, da man hier mehr erwarten kann als im Münchner Haus.

PS.: Die 5 Sterne Bewertung sind nicht nachzuvollziehen oder teilweise komplett fehl am Platz, da es sich hier häufig um Touri-Bewertung handelt, welche mit der Bahn hochgefahren sind und im dort vorhanden Restaurant was gegessen und...

I have stayed in many huts across Europe and especially in the area of the Bavarian alps, normally the staff is extremely nice and exemplify the meaning of what would be called Gemütlichkeit . it is extremely sad the on such a nice peak the wirt is so impolite and unfriendly, the atmosphere in the hut is as if having guests is some kind of disgusting chore for him, i literally felt unwanted in this hut. i would recommend others to seek out one of the many other huts in the routes leading to the Zugspitze and to completely avoid this place, I'm not one to write negative reviews and usually keep these sort of thoughts to my self but feeling that this hut is an affront to the spirit of what alpine huts are i felt compelled...
