This is a great, small, freely accessible castle ruin a little less than 1km away from the town center free parking lot with a playground 500 meters further along the trail. I came here on a warm July weekday afternoon with my three kids ages 6, 4, and 2 years. I wore the toddler and the other two walked. We parked at the free parking lot off of Burgherrenstrasse, then walked along the streets to Katholische Kirche Hohenecken, and continued on the trails up to the castle. They are marked with two different route options (maiden and knight) but I wasn't sure at the start of the walk which one I wanted to be doing, and there were a few path diversions that you can choose from along the way. I used Google Maps to help guide me and ultimately made it there in about 20 minutes walking at the 4yo's pace. While the path was compacted dirt, it was still slippery in some parts and I'd recommend good shoes; I doubt a stroller would do well but I can't remember any terrible amount of rocks or roots that would absolutely contraindicate the use of one. It was certainly uphill for the entire walk, making both of my kids complain, but thankfully short enough and well shaded (at least until you get to the ruin). We found a bench along the way that we paused to have a small snack. Once at the ruin, you go past a goat pasture and into the castle grounds, which has a large grassy area between a cave/rock wall complex and the bulk of the actual castle. In this area you'll find a great informational sign with a map of the ruin, pointing out which areas served what purpose (in German and English!). From there you can walk around the side of the castle and up the steps into the main body of the castle, and explore the foundations of the rooms. There are some nice views. There are no covered rooms to enter, nor any towers, and it's overall quite small (taking us less than 20 minutes to explore fully). The castle itself is very sunny, and I had to keep a close eye on the younger kids to make sure they didn't fall from any of the windows or trip on the rocky uneven paths. We ended up going to the playground after this, which was a fun addition to the day that sweetened the deal for me kids. As it was just a ruin, there were no food kiosks or anything of the sort, so bring your own food and water. I had good cell service the entire time. I saw a surprising amount of other people while we were there, more than at most ruins we have been to, perhaps due to the proximity of the ruin to the town. The town did have a few restaurants along our walk that were open, in case you want to combine the trip with a meal.Overall, this is a great small ruin that is worth about a 30 minute drive, in my opinion, or more if you combine it with a visit to the playground or a nearby restaurant, that is very manageable for a parent with young children (as long as you bring water and snacks), though likely not possible...

It was my first time and Germany, and I got the chance to stay in Kaiserslautern for 3 weeks. The weather at that time was unpredictable and one day, it was an amazing day, and the sun was out so I decided to hike and found on the map this place, so I ended up here. It was an amazing place to unwind and chill. I came here alone, and I enjoyed it even though I somewhat got lost in the woods and been stung by plants such as poison ivy. The view was mesmerizing and upon reading the history of the place made me somewhat proud as I tend to be in that place. It was ruined but the beauty of it remains. If ever I will go back in Kaiser, I will not hesitate to go in this...

Driving here is not complicated but you will have to park on the street so get acquainted with the parking rules of the town.

The walk up is a small uphill hike but a very short one, it may get u a little tired, but it is worth it.

While on the small hike there will be some cool sites to take pics as well as some plates talking about the history of the castle. but it is in German so download that google translator.

The castle is in ruins but it is very pretty and amazing views are all over.

This is a very instagram able/ tik tokable.... place.

It is mostly ruins but if you like to see historical places this will...
