Rostock Art Gallery — Attraction in Rostock

Disappointed! Rather deceptive to visitors.

On the website of the Kunsthalle Rostock, it is stated that the collection covers East German Modernism, including works from the Dresden Late Expressionism and the Neuen Saechlichkeit. This is what motivated our visit.

However, these works are not open to regular visitors, and the visitor is not informed of this. We were not able to find any instance in which this was mentioned on the gallery's website. We basically had to find out for ourselves: after paying for our entry tickets, we visited two interesting but rather small temporary exhibitions, and that was it.

The 8 Euro p/person entry price seemed to contribute to the misleading, as for this price one usually expects a visit that lasts more than 20 minutes. For example, in the region, at the Pommersches Landesmuseum in Greifswald, one pays 7,50 Euros and one has access to a great paintings collection that includes works from Caspar David Friedrich, Vincent van Gogh and other masters, as well as the archeological and historic sections, and the temporary exhibitions.

After asking the person at the reception, we were told that one could book a special visit to see these works. Again, this is not mentioned on the website, which unables non-local visitors to properly plan their visit.

Please make sure that you properly inform visitors what they will be able to access, both on your website and upon entry. A visit to a museum should be a rewarding experience, not a...

Am 21. Oktober war ich zu Besuch in der Kunsthalle Rostock, weil ich mir die Ausstellung zum 90. Geburtstag von Ronald Paris anschauen wollte.

Laut Internetauftritt der Kunsthalle läuft die Ausstellung bis zum 22.10.2023, vor Ort dann die Überraschung: sie ist bis 5.11. geplant. Nirgendwo als nur am Monitor hinter der Kasse wird darüber informiert.

Die zweite Überraschung: Größe, Gestaltung und Räumlichkeit der Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle: Ich habe noch nie eine so diametrale Wiedersprüchlichkeit erlebt: Sehr wertschätzende, kenntnisreiche Informationen auf den Texttafeln zu den Bildern und zum Leben Ronald Paris, im Gegensatz dazu ein absolut stiefmütterlicher Raum, die wenigen Bilder, Grafiken, Zeichnungen des wirklich großartigen Künstlers zusammengeklatscht an weißen Gitterwänden in einem grässlichen Ambiente. Irgendwie hat es mich an einen Abstellraum oder eine Besenkammer erinnert.

Ganz ehrlich liebe Kunsthallen-Entscheider? Diese Ausstellung wird dem Künstler Ronald Paris nicht im Geringsten gerecht! Ich habe mich für Sie fremdgeschämt!

Ansonsten war die Kunsthalle voller Menschen, die die Udo Lindenberg Ausstellung besuchten. Dafür war das Personal sehr hilfsbereit und freundlich, ab und zu verirrte sich einer der Udo-Besucher in die Paris-Ausstellung und war irritiert. Nun...

A rather small art gallery inside a beautiful park in Rostock. It was founded in 1969 and hosted many collections of modern paintings and photographs since. At the time of my visit, there was a collection of paintings of "Ulrike Theusner" which was pretty interesting even though I am not the biggest fan of modern art, I enjoyed the exhibition.
