Bahnhof Schierke — Attraction in Wernigerode

We took the Train from this Station. Plenty of Parking availabe. Its a fun 35+ minute train ride up to the Brocken. The scenery would be amazing if not for the miles and miles and acres of dead Trees. The utter devastation and decimation of this Forrest is crazy. Years ago this was all green. The train ride nontheless is fun and you can take amazing photos and videos. The ride from Schierke up to the Broken and back to Schierke cost 51 euros. If you consider the up keep and maintenance its not bad. If you are capabale you can either hike up and take the train down or take the train up and hike down. Next time this is what I would do. Especially if the weather is great as it was today. I think its worth the money to visit the Brocken and make the train ride. Who knows how this area will look in...

Ein kleiner, Nostalgischer bahnhof Der Parkplatz dazugwhörend ist mir 6 Euro ziemlich teuer. Aus Wikepedia: Der in einer Höhe von 687 Meter gelegene Bahnhof wurde am 20. Juni 1898 eröffnet und ist seitdem ständig als Bahnhof in Nutzung. Mit der Fertigstellung der Strecke zum Brocken am 4. Oktober 1898 verkehrten hier die vorwiegend touristisch genutzten Züge zum höchsten Berg Norddeutschlands. Da im Winter der Bahnhof Brocken aufgrund der Schneemassen nicht bedient wurde, endeten die Züge vom 16. Oktober bis zum 29. April immer in Schierke. Erst nach den Deutschen Wintersportmeisterschaften im Frühjahr 1950 wurde der Brocken auch im Winter angefahren. Durch die Lage des Brockens im Grenzgebiet zwischen DDR und BRD wurde die Brockenbahn zwischen Schierke und dem Bahnhof Brocken ab 13. August 1961 für den öffentlichen Verkehr gesperrt. Bahn und Bahnhof dienten nur noch militärischen Zwecken beziehungsweise für den Bedarf der örtlichen Bevölkerung.
