Komfo Anokye Sword site is located at Bantama in the Ashanti region of Ghana in West Africa. It is inside modern day Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). In the year 1695 the Kings of Ashanti states gathered together to choose a common leader to rule the mighty and formidable Ashanti empire. Every king came with their black stool that represent their rulership and authority. After consensus has been built and understanding prevailed, they then decided to call upon the gods and ancestors to choose the leader to rule the empire. Komfo Anokye the then Chief Priest of the empire prayed and call upon the gods to choose their leader. In the process a golden stool believed to be from the gods and the other world appeared in the sky above them. It was said the King on whose feet the golden stool will land is the chosen king of the great Ashanti empire. Nana Komfo Anokye further called the golden stool to the ground to land on the chosen king. The golden stool landed at the feet of Otumfour Osei Tutu (I). Nana Otumfour Osei Tutu (I) is the king chosen by the god to rule the Ashanti empire. Now it is time to make commitment and vow to the new king chosen by God, so all the other states black stool were collected and was buried in the ground as their vows were made and the sword was dropped to seal buried black stool in the ground since then no one has been able to withdraw it. Since 1695 no one has been able to dig the sword Komfo Anokye dropped into the ground.

I am giving this museum a 3-star rating due to the unprofessionalism exhibited towards me and my partner. As a Ghanaian from the diaspora, I was excited to learn more about my culture and introduce my partner (white man) to my heritage. However, our visit on August 2, 2024, was marred by the behavior of the staff members. When I asked for recommendations on other sites to explore, one of them made a derogatory comment: “It seems like you have seen everything in Kumasi, so the next stop is my place.” I will leave it at that. The museum itself is worth a visit and can be seen in about 10 minutes, with three main attractions: the sword, posters, and stools. I would recommend including it in your itinerary, but the staff desperately need proper etiquette training, proper education of the site and wisdom about how to treat people. Thank you.

Okomfo Anokye Sword Site is located at the premises Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. According to history, the chief priest Okomfo Anokye who conjured the Ashanti Golden stool from the skies had a covenant with the chiefs and pushed the sword into the soil, he predicted that the site would be a place of healing. That was the main reason for building the Hospital at that particular place. It is believed that the moment the sword is uprooted, that will be the end of the Ashanti Kingdom. When you get there after paying the entrance fees, the tour guide welcomes you and offers you stools which you will sit on to listen to the full history of the Sword, the Symbols of the Ashanti Kingdom and so much more. The Ashanti Kingdom is enriched with so many cultural symbols and their meanings. #DelaAkafia

🇬🇭✨ Unveiling Ghana’s Sacred Past — The Okomfo Anokye Sword Site ✨🇬🇭

Tucked away in the heart of Kumasi, this sacred spot holds one of the most powerful symbols of Ashanti unity, spiritual authority, and Ghanaian heritage — the legendary Okomfo Anokye Sword.

Okomfo Anokye, a revered priest and co-founder of the Ashanti Empire, is believed to have planted the sword into the ground over 300 years ago, declaring that no one would ever be able to remove it. To this day, it remains firmly rooted, untouched and immovable — even after attempts by the British and others.

This site is more than just a tourist stop; it’s a deeply spiritual place, and a living testament to the power of tradition and faith.

🎟 Entry Fee: Only GHC 5 gets you a short but impactful guided tour, offering fascinating insights into the Ashanti Kingdom, Okomfo Anokye’s miracles, and the unification of the Asante people.

📚 There are also books and pamphlets available for purchase to help you understand the story beyond the legend.

📸 Important Note: Out of deep respect for the cultural and spiritual relevance, photography of the sword itself is strictly prohibited.

📍 Location: The site is located within the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital premises and is easy to access when exploring Kumasi.

Whether you’re a local looking to reconnect with your roots, or a visitor discovering Ghana’s treasures — this site deserves a spot on your itinerary.

🛏 Nearby Hotels: • Frederick’s Lodge • Golden Tulip Kumasi City • Miklin Hotel Kumasi

✍🏾 Add this to your must-visit cultural experiences in Ghana. The past truly lives here.

The Okomfo Anokye sword site is located in a small, clean, modestly decorated building within the grounds of the Okomfo Anokye Hospital. Unfortunately, the history of Okomfo Anokye and the huge bustling hospital cause the site to be somewhat anticlimactic. I was enthralled because I was already excited to learn more about this amazing man and mystical story. However, I can imagine the average tourist might find it subpar. Improvements can be made by; making sure the video is working, hanging all art on wall or display case, more animated and enthusiastic guides, perhaps subtle music in background and tourist items for purchase. If you are already in the area I would recommend you stopping by for the history of Okomfo Anokye and to see the second largest hospital in Ghana, but don't make a special trip just for this one site unless it has special...
