Impressive buildings and location, but absolutely zero information about what you are seeing, and why people are kissing a dead guys feet. Climbed down a ladder into some caves beneath the church, but again, no information on what they are or why they are there.

It would have been nice to have been able to read a few signs or pamphlets on who the guy is, rather than having to resort to looking it up on our phones.

We were expecting to be able to walk round the grounds of the monastery, but you can go in the church and that's pretty much it...unless you accidentally visit when a service is on, and walk into the monastery by mistake. Don't be surprised if you're only there for half an hour, and leave with more questions than answers.

Shame, as we wanted to learn more about the history of the island.

It's also fairly obvious that the nuns aren't happy that it's a tourist attraction, and aren't welcoming in...

Absolutely beautiful. There are 2 places of worship on this site, the new and the old church so make sure to visit both. It is free to enter. They do close between 1 and 4 so avoid these times. Signs ask visitors to dress modestly which translates to elbows, knees and shoulders covered if possible. There is no car park but street parking is available directly outside. There are no guide books or Information plaques so the history is unknown unless you research yourself or pay for a local tour operator trip. There is a very fascinating story behind the saint that the monastery honours and so it is recommended that you learn a little about it before you go so that you can appreciate what you are looking at in the old church. I could not see a toilet and refreshments are...

This place was closing within about 25 minutes of our arrival. Didn't get to walk around much. I really enjoyed the Sister who told the obnoxious person in our group to shut up - they have a very serious volume rule, if you're not whispering, you're in trouble. I don't know about you but being in trouble with Women who have a direct line to the Big Guy upstairs doesn't sound like fun to me. I took the ladder down to the caves beneath the main room - I didn't have enough time but it seemed like there was a 2nd room under there.. if only I were thinner, and quicker, I could have fit. Maybe one day I'll return if only to crawl into the second room below to enjoy some good old Greek...

The monestary itself was really pretty. We went (coincidentally) in the middle of the event. While neither of us is religious, we can definitely respect and appreciate beautiful cultural experiences such as these. The building itself was really pretty, especially the paintings. Important to note, women with legs showing (I had shorts on) have to cover up by wearing a skirt (you can borrow one there). For men, this isn't an issue. If you like either religious events, you should go at the right time. For everyone who gets a bit overstimulated with lots of people there (and aren't coming for the priest), I'd recommend going later in the afternoon, when the building is almost empty.
