The Edessa Waterfalls, located a scenic drive away from Thessaloniki, offer a breathtaking experience that is well worth the journey. The drive itself, approximately an hour and a half, takes you through the picturesque landscapes of northern Greece, dotted with charming villages and lush greenery. The route is smooth and well-maintained, making it an enjoyable trip whether you're traveling by car or bus. Upon arriving in Edessa, the waterfalls, known locally as "Varosi," immediately captivate with their majestic beauty. The sound of cascading water and the sight of the powerful streams are incredibly refreshing. The main waterfall, Karanos, plunges dramatically from a height of 70 meters, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. One of the unique features of these waterfalls is the opportunity to walk behind them. This rare experience allows you to feel the cool mist up close and witness the powerful flow of water from a whole new perspective. The area around the waterfalls is beautifully landscaped, with lush vegetation and charming stone bridges that add to the fairytale-like atmosphere. The cool mist from the falls provides a pleasant respite, especially on warmer days. There are also several cozy cafes and restaurants nearby, where you can relax and enjoy local delicacies while taking in the stunning views. Overall, the Edessa Waterfalls offer an unforgettable natural experience, and the journey from Thessaloniki adds to the adventure, making it a perfect day trip for nature lovers and anyone looking to explore the serene beauty of northern Greece.
Visiting the Edessa Waterfalls was a breathtaking experience. Nestled in the verdant landscape of northern Greece, these cascades offer a serene escape into nature. My journey began with a scenic drive through picturesque villages and winding roads, leading up to the town of Edessa itself. Upon arriving, the sound of rushing water greeted me, and I followed the signs towards the falls. As I approached, the sight was simply awe-inspiring. The Edessa Waterfalls are not just one waterfall but a series of cascades that tumble over a cliff into a lush gorge below. The sheer volume of water, especially during the spring thaw, is remarkable. To get closer, I descended a series of stairs, and as I got nearer, the spray of the falls cooled the air. The entire area was enveloped in mist, adding to the magical atmosphere. There were several viewing platforms strategically placed for optimal views and photo opportunities. The lush greenery around the falls added to the tranquility of the place. It was a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and take in the beauty of nature. I spent a peaceful afternoon there, listening to the soothing sound of water rushing over the rocks. Visiting the Edessa Waterfalls left a lasting impression on me. It was a reminder of the raw power and timeless beauty of nature, and I left feeling rejuvenated and inspired. For anyone traveling in northern Greece, a visit to these magnificent falls is an absolute must.
These waterfalls are well worth a visit. We went by train from Thessaloniki (around one and a half hours) and walked to the falls. Paved walkways and stairs lead around and down below the falls. There's even a walkway underneath one of the falls. An old water mill and museum, a lizard aquarium and a route through to the attractive and quaint old town make for a pleasant day out. The restaurant at the top of the falls is very friendly and reasonably priced. We recommend the speciality dish positioned next to moussaka on the menu (similar to moussaka but with melt in the mouth beef not mince (sorry - can't remember the name)). If you wander further into the city, in addition to a fair range of shops, cafes and restaurants, you are rewarded with yet more pleasant water features and shady arbours. We caught the last train back to Thessaloniki - that was slightly unpredictable, but the confusion was managed in a very friendly manner by the railway staff!
I would’ve given this place 5 stars, but for the trash that is lying around everywhere and ruining the natural beauty of the falls and trails that have been created. It’s such a unique area, and refreshingly cool & breezy on a hot day, I was disappointed to see that the surrounding aren’t cared for as they should be. We visited the cave as well, it’s small but worth a visit especially since the entrance is only €1. There are restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops nearby and a lot of really old, beautiful trees. A couple of them have been hollowed out from fire damage but are still alive somehow. Really interesting place overall, just wish it was maintained or that people cared enough to not trash it
The Edessa Waterfalls are a must-see if you're visiting Greece. These stunning waterfalls are located in the town of Edessa, and they are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The waterfalls are made up of seven different cascades, and they drop over 70 meters into the river below. The water is crystal clear, and the falls are surrounded by lush greenery. It's a truly breathtaking sight. You can take a walk along the trail that leads to the base of the falls. No matter how you choose to experience the Edessa Waterfalls, you're sure to be amazed. They are a truly beautiful and unique natural wonder.
A very pretty place. The waterfall stretches about a hundred fifty feet from the top to the bottom. However, it continues as the water Cascades over different levels of rocks. For a small fee of 1 euro you can take a short walk into an underground narrow path where you see stalactites and stalagmites that where formed. The stairs take you from the top to the bottom and even behind the water falls. Bring a camera and a comfortable pair of shoes as there is quite a bit of walking up and down. It is really worth the time to see. There are also cafes in the area that have a nice ambience but pricey.

Description
The Edessa Waterfalls or Edessis Waterfalls are located in Edessa in Greece. The falls are a natural phenomenon that arose after a strong earthquake that struck the surrounding area in the 14th century. Since then, many changes have taken place in their morphology due to earthquakes of smaller scale.
