The 4 stars are for the whole area, not just for the beach itself (read the entire review and you’ll understand why).
The good points:
The beach is close to the city.
The walk along the promenade is very pleasant (but only during the day - I'll come back to this topic when I'll talk about the negative points of the beach.).
The water is crystal clear.
The beach is quite diverse: there are both areas with sun loungers and free zones where you can spread your towel directly on the ground. One such area is at the end of the promenade, where there’s also a small, very picturesque grotto. Right next to it is a mini-cove with shallow, warm water.
On the main sandy beach, the water remains shallow for a long distance from the shore, ideal for families with children.
In the free area (along the pedestrian zone), the shore is rocky, which makes it great for snorkeling.
You can also practice water sports (although the offer is not very diverse).
If you want to test your swimming skills, you can try to reach the small islet (actually just a rock rising from the sea) where the Greek flag is hoisted.
The underwater fauna is quite varied, I've even seen some giant sea urchins.
The negative points:
The staff renting out the sun loungers is rude. Only one star for them.
I’ve mentioned the pedestrian area along the seashore a few times. To get there on foot from the city, go down Anapafseos Street until you’ll see a small paved road closed to car traffic. During the day, the walk is very pleasant, but in the evening I noticed some suspicious young people hanging around the area. It’s best to avoid it after dark, especially since, for several hundred meters, you have only the seashore on one side and a vacant lot on the other.
Other observations:
Dogs are not allowed on the organized beach, but you can take them to the free area.
If you decide to swim near the pedestrian area, be careful on windy days, because the waves are rather strong and might push you against the rocks (the great danger being due to those rocks who are very close to the...
Read moreDefinitely one of the best beaches I’d recommend in the north-east area of Crete and more specifically a driving distance from Elounda and next to Ayios Nikolaos.
This beach is very easily accessible as you can park on the road right next to the beach and there’s no hike needed. We went to the left side of the beach where the beds and umbrellas were a little more expensive as they belong to the resort nearby (€20 for 2 sun-beds and an umbrella) but we made this choice consciously to avoid families with kids as much as possible as we wanted to have a relaxing/quiet day at the beach. On the right side of the beach, you’ll find more local families. On the same side you’ll also find the river outlet that ends at the beach. Not surprisingly, the water that runs down is pretty cold even at such a hot day!
The water on the left side is actually warm enough yet refreshing and most importantly for me, crystal-clear! The beach is sandy and the water runs shallow for a while before it gradually deepens.
Additionally, on the beach there’s a bar that serves drinks but also some snacks such as salads, sandwiches and fruit salads!
If I had to choose between the best beaches around the area, this would probably be...
Read moreThe beach itself is average, the water is clean and shallow, but there’s almost no free zone. The woman, who sells the sunbeds and umbrellas for €10, is very arrogant, so I would never visit the beach again. On August 3rd there was going to be e a PRIVATE beach party and she said that we have to leave until 5pm. We arrived at about 4pm and still she wanted us to pay €10 for an umbrella and two sunbeds in poor condition. What’s more, the beach is a public one, so why does she think that she has the right to make tourists leave because of a private event. On top of that, at 16:50 the staff and she started telling people that the beach “IS CLOSING” in 10 minutes and made people leave earlier than 5pm. Wth does this mean? This isn’t a supermarket. If you don’t wanna pay money for trash sunbeds and rude attitude, DON’T GO TO ALMYROS BEACH, especially to the left of the...
