Wonderful museum! Giorgos Afordakis is so knowledgeable, kind and welcoming and Ester was also very lovely and helpful. Both made our experience very memorable. You will learn a lot and must visit if you are in the area. We talked about medicines, history, mythology, and so much more, ate food from Giorgos's garden, drank special oreganum tea and tried mountain distilled botanical raki (much better and smoother than what you get in restaurants!).

I loved every moment and was sad to have to eventually leave. I can't wait to return one day and talk and learn more from Giorgos. This chance visit to the museum is easily one of my happiest and most memorable experiences in Crete as I love botany, herbalism and history. Even if you do not know much on these topics, you will come away feeling like the natural environment of Crete means alot more to you.

This museum runs on donations so please be very generous when you...

Rodanthi Museum is in the village of Kritsa, nestled in the Dictimountain range. It is housed in an old Venetian Merchants house and as you step out to the veranda you feel time stand still, with the breathtaking Mirabello Bay views and the aroma’s of all the dried wild herbs. I cant help but imagine people sipping mountain herb tea here centuries ago looking at the exact same views. The museum’s founder & curator, Mr George Afordakos , drew us in by expertly weaving stories of fossils, flora and history. He was able to command all our attention, including that of a five year old, with his mellow yet passionate musings for a couple of hours. We finished off with a herbal tea and tasting some sweet cretan pepper corns.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to walk nature paths around this area again without wondering if I am walking on treasures.

The museum is free but accepts tips. Generous one...

Probably the best museum in Crete. Mr. Afordakos is a walking encyclopedia with knowledge of all the endemic plants (and non-endemic plants) of Crete and beyond (mythology, philosophy, paleontology, botany, plant dyes, history, the medicinal properties of plants...). Get ready for a journey of discovery into the world of plants and the past. When you visit, it's a good idea to take your time and send a message beforehand about what you're interested in learning about, and to make sure that Mr. Afordakos will be at the museum. As an art historian, I have been fortunate enough to visit many museums in different countries, and I can say that this museum should be visited by every Cretan, not just tourists. The unique biodiversity of Crete is a treasure that we should all be aware of. Botanists from the best universities in America come to learn from Mr. Afordakos and to work with him. Each of us should have knowledge about this treasure. I warmly thank Mr. Afordakos for sharing so much knowledge with me and for the time he devoted to me. I will definitely return again and again to this hidden treasure of our island. Next time, I will remember to bring a notebook to write down all this valuable information. Thank you very...
