Visited in March 2024 This was a fabulous site and has a really well stocked Museum on the Hill. There is restoring that is in process and it was interesting to see some of the pure white marble that is being injected into the site. This was an enjoyable site along our 30 trip thru Greece

Eleusis was the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries, or the Mysteries of Demeter and Kore, which became popular in the Greek-speaking world as early as 600 BC, and attracted initiates during Roman Empire before declining mid-late 4th century AD. These Mysteries revolved around a belief that there was a hope for life after death for those who were initiated. Such a belief was cultivated from the introduction ceremony in which the hopeful initiates were shown a number of things including the seed of life in a stalk of grain. The central myth of the Mysteries was Demeter's quest for her lost daughter (Kore the Maiden, or Persephone) who had been abducted by Hades. It was here that Demeter, disguised as an old lady who was abducted by pirates in Crete, came to an old well where the four daughters of the local king Keleos and his queen Metaneira found her and took her to their palace to nurse the son of Keleos and Metaneira, Demophoon. Demeter raised Demophoon, anointing him with nectar and ambrosia and placing him at night in the fire in order to endow him with immortality, until Metaneira found out and insulted her. Demeter arose insulted, and casting off her disguise, and, in all her glory, instructed Meteneira to build a temple to her. Keleos, informed the next morning by Metaneira, ordered the citizens to build a rich shrine to Demeter, where she sat in her temple until the lot of the world prayed to Zeus to make the world...

The site is beautiful, such a special feeling here. The cave of Hades and Persephone is truly magical! But the best thing was the museum. Easily the best museum I've ever visited. This is the benchmark for what museums should strive for. A truly unique, culturally immersive, and experiential way of presenting the historical context and meaning of the site. It was incredibly informative while still being accessible. It has obviously had a lot of thought and care put into its layout and concept. All my senses and feelings were engaged. I walked away feeling very moved, and with a deeper appreciation and understanding of ancient Greek culture, religion, history, and of course the Elusian mysteries. Thank you to all involved who created this special and...

Few realize that this sacred place was in antiquity, the equivalent of the Vatcan / Jerusalem / Agia Sofia of these times. Every respectable citizen of the Greco-Roman world had to have at least one attedance of the Eleusinian Mysteries on his resume. Unfortunately, comparably little remains of this. The Goths of Alaric dealt the first heavy blow. Earthquakes, Christian fanatics, other invaders, and continued habitation of the city gradually robbed the site of most of its magnificent constructions. But none could touch its mystique. Worship of the cycle of life and of fertility, the awe of the underworld still echo in these ruins. The site is easy to visit, and there is an abundance of cafes and restaurants just outside its fences.

Numerous works are currently being carried out at the archaeological site of Eleusis (this is evidenced by today's images) given that Eleusis is the European Capital of Culture for the year 2023. In addition to the preservation of the monuments and the restoration of many of them, the restoration of the museum, which is located within the archaeological site, follows. Everything that has not related to the archaeological site will be removed, such as: buildings and objects. The interior of the museum has already been formed and has been (dressed) with beautiful colors.I would like to believe that at the beginning of spring 2023 it will be ready to welcome and compensate visitors with its exhibits.
