Archaeological Museum of the Asclepieion of Epidaurus — Attraction in Municipality of Epidaurus

The museum is realy small and highly neglected. It's collection has been plundered from the national museum in Athens leaving mostly replicas behind. Its exhibition is very old fashioned and a bit confusing. The museum collection has some great building parts from the roofs of the ancient temples of the area that are really impressive.

But although the museum has its problems the archaeological site is one of the top sites in Greece. The ancient theatre is huge and well preserved (athens theater festival is hosted every summer there). And the remains of the buildings and the temples are really interesting and nicely presented.

Muzeul arheologic a fost construit pentru a adăposti numeroasele și importantele descoperiri rezultate ca urmare a îndelungatelor (1881-1928) săpături în zona Sanctuarul lui Asclepius, efectuate de arheologul Panagi Kavadias și Societatea de Arheologie. Construcția clădirii a fost finalizată în 1902 și a fost deschisă ca muzeu în 1909. Aranjamentul muzeistic a fost conceput tot de Kavadias și reprezintă un concept de prezentare a multor exponate într-un spațiu restrâns. Este unul dintre cele mai vechi muzee arheologice de arhitectură antică greacă. Cele mai importante piese au fost duse la Muzeul Național de Arheologie din Atena, în locul lor, la Epidaur, rămând copii. Muzeul este compus dintr-un hol la intrare, urmat de două săli lungi care prezintă o gamă largă de exponate datând din perioada arhaică până în epoca romană. Încercăm să grupăm exponatele astfel: porțiuni din clădiri: propileea (intrare fastuoasă) teatrului antic, propileea Templului lui Asclepios, frontoanele Templului lui Asclepios, Tholos (Thymele, Domul, altar), capetele Templului lui Artemis statui clasice și romane de mari dimensiuni: Hygia (sec. After seeing the theatre, walking around the surrounding areas and taking in the scenery. Then I think you should go to the museum in order to piece everything together. This museum has all the artifacts found in the surrounding areas.
