Only foundations remain today of this important temple which was of the Doric order, with six columns on short sides and eleven on the long, an unusually short squat proportion. It was built c.375 B.C.; it's architect was Theodotos. The temple had pedimental sculpture: the Fall of Troy was on the front eastern pediment, and a Battle between Greeks and Amazons on the western. On roof apexes and corners were carved marble figures. These sculptures were regarded as being exceptionally fine at the time, being the work of master sculptors of the period. The originals are now unfortunately in Athens, with only casts in the small unimpressive site museum. The temple had a gold and ivory cult statue of the god in the cella.

4cent BC classical Greece site. Very large area and hugely touristic. Very famous. The theatre is especially good because of its size and because it is remarkably intact considering its age. I would consider going to lesser sites also though to get a feeling for the history. Epidavrous has become a bit too overrun. It’s hard to get a feeling for the place unless you see it off season.

The Asklepion is a Classical Greek sanctuary for those seeking healing. The site is in a beautiful area with trees and scenery that invokes a feeling if peace and perhaps healing. It is easy to envision travelers making their way here seeking cures, perhaps even miracles. The theater alone is with the visit for anyone looking for a good classical site photo op though.

Grand site archéologique à découvrir avec les ruines du temple d'Asclépios, dieu de la médecine. Vous retrouverez une grande zone où se trouvaient le temple, les différents bâtiments en lien avec Asclepios dont des Thermes, la salle où se réalisaient les soins du dieu, les ruines d'un Tholos (construit à l'endroit où aurait été foudroyé Asclepios et d'où il soignerait les pèlerins dans leurs rêves depuis le sous sol) mais il est actuellement en travaux donc peu visible. N'oubliez pas de pousser un peu la marche pour aller au fond de la zone et voir la porte d'entrée antique et le puit de purification.

Luogo bucolico caratterizzato da rovine. Il percorso inizia con particolari strade boscherecce per poi raggiungere la fine del sito dinnanzi al venusto Tempio di Asclepio, semi-dio che personificava la scienza medica e che incoraggiava i soggetti a invigorire la propria anima attraverso la ricerca del rasserenamento dato da sane distrazioni che all'epoca erano rappresentate da drammi che avevano luogo nel Teatro Antico di Epidauro creato appositamente in sua memoria. I monti limitrofi danno un senso di protezione e di benessere al visitatore creando una prospettiva di simbiosi con la natura.

Επίδαυρος! Τι να πρωτοπεί κάνεις για αυτό το αρχαίο μνημείο και παγκόσμιο σύμβολο. Ένας χώρος που πρέπει να τον επισκεφτεί κανείς αν βρεθεί στην περιοχή. Εκτός από το αρχαίο θέατρο υπάρχει το ιερό του Ασκληπιού, τα προπύλαια, ο αιγυπτιακός Ναός, το στάδιο και ένα μικρό αλλά εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον αρχαιολογικό μουσείο με αρκετά γνήσια κομμάτια του ιερού. Η είσοδος είναι 12€/άτομο και για τις μέρες με ήλιο καλό είναι να έχετε νερό και καπέλο μαζί σας. Επίσης υπάρχει μεγάλο ελεύθερο πάρκινγκ και εύκολη πρόσβαση σε όλους τους χώρους.

Description
The Sanctuary of Asclepius was a sanctuary in Epidaurus dedicated to Asclepius. Especially in the Classical and Hellenistic periods, it was the main holy site of Asclepius. The sanctuary at Epidaurus was the rival of such major cult sites as the Sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia and Apollo at Delphi.
