Regrettably, the museum was closed today due to Orthodox Easter holidays. I knew it (and will return later this year to write more); anyway, the museum was not the main target of my trip. I wished to see the surrounding wetland reserve, which is not marked on the Maps (to my surprise) and the ancient ruins of the Temple of Artemis. The wetland is exciting, full of life, just the educational path was partly under-water and I did not have proper shoes to walk it, going bare-foot did not seem to be a good idea. The birds escaped in no time, just the tiny tortoise stayed; actually, I moved it aside worried it would get run over by the cars driving the unpaved road. I enjoyed walking and watching the sea, the rich wetland vegetation, and after two attempts found the temple ruins (yes, they are accessible through the museum entrance but driving by, I focused on the narrow road and sharp curve missing it twice). Next to the temple ruins, you can see a small house made of stones said to be the hermitage of St. Timotheus. Very close, you can enjoy wonderful beaches, watching or swimming,...
Read moreThe place is amazing by itself, a lot of really nicely preserved artifacts and stelae, but the staff is super hostile and makes you feel unwanted. The only nic lady was at the cash register, then another 2 or 3 were cruising the museum, "protecting" it; one of them started shoutung at me for taking photos - ok I get it, no photos. But then she was following us around like rogue dogs and in the second and third room people were taking photos all over and she was looking at them and I just didn't get the point. Afterwards at the outer temple ruins, the guard tore apart our tickets eventhough I asked him not to cause I wanna keep them as souvenirs. "No lady, must check you!" OMG, there were 6 of us at the place, 4 was our family, yea you really need to make sure we don't enter without tickets. So the staff spoiled the whole event, which again, is a beautiful and really well preserved site and is well worth visiting. Tickets 6€ adults and free for young under 25 if they are from EU. Otherwise the...
Read moreAn impressive museum very well laid out, lit and with excellent displays and historical explanations relating to the exhibits. The archaeological site is also quite interesting and the walk around the temple ruins in a serene and well designed environment makes the drive more than worthwhile. The staff at the museum are very friendly and ready to assist and answer your questions.A great experience overall! One downside is the absolute lack of any road signs that will help the visitors to guide them to the site until you are literally on top of the entrance, and then if you don't look at that moment at that specific direction, you'll miss it! Even GPS and car navigation led us to the beach in Vavrona instead of the site and we had to ask a local who finally told us how to go the last leg of the drive to find it....
