I've visited Athens over 10 times, but this was my first visit to this Olympic complex. It was built for the 2004 Olympics and consists of several venues for all sports. The complex is located in the northern Athens suburbs, so ignore some reviews here saying this is the historic marble stadium - IT IS NOT - that one is in downtown Athens. We visited it for the Iron Maiden concert held here on 16/07/22. Before the concert we walked around the huge complex grounds, seeing a lot of modern, but at the same time neglected architecture. The main stadium is certainly the biggest attraction - outstanding modern design. It reminds on Santiago Calatrava's architecture with an extensive use of curved metal structures (maybe even he is a designer, I don't know). The stadium inside is enormous - despite the fact there were 50.000 fans at the Iron Maiden concert it looked semi-empty - the upper seating ring wasn't even put to sale. Seeing that huge space and other semi neglected buildings around, I recalled an article I've read few years ago that the Greek financial crisis and bankruptcy started with organizing...
Read moreI went here as an England fan to watch the nations league game. The stadium is lovely, seating is good, very good view of the pitch. The game was great. The facilities, however, left much to be desired. Two portaloo’s near the turnstiles, no handwashing facilities, no flush and disgraceful hygiene. More toilets apparently down some stairs but no signage so didn’t know they were there, you have to come out of the ground to access toilets. Beverages also left a lot to be desired, and as football grounds go, overly priced as usual, beer, water and hotdogs was your lot sold from a little pop up tent. There were stalls selling gyros and beer as you walk from the tram, this is CASH only. The organisation of getting away fans into the stadium was abysmal, the toxic police were just itching to let loose on the England fans. In order to reorganise a queue of fans getting into the stadium they think tear gas, batons and riot shields is the way to go! Disgraceful behaviour from...
