The view from the windmills is nothing short of spectacular. From their elevated vantage point, you’re treated to a 360-degree panorama of Patmos’ rolling hills, the sparkling Aegean Sea, and distant islands shimmering on the horizon. The sight of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds a spiritual gravitas to the scene, while the golden hues of sunset bathe the whitewashed houses of Chora in a warm, ethereal glow. It’s a view that invites contemplation, making it easy to understand why this spot has captivated visitors for centuries. The restoration of these windmills, completed in 2010, is a remarkable achievement that breathes new life into their ancient stones. Originally built in 1588 (with the third added in 1863), the windmills fell into disrepair in the 1950s as industrial milling took over. Thanks to the vision of Swiss banker and Patmos enthusiast Charles Pictet, along with contributions from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and a dedicated team of local shipbuilders, French millers, Swiss sail specialists, and Greek and French engineers, the windmills were meticulously revived. Architect Daphne Becket oversaw the project, ensuring not just the restoration of their stone shells but also their functional “soul.” Today, one windmill grinds flour as a living museum, another generates electricity, and plans for the third involve water pumping—all a nod to sustainable, environmentally friendly practices. This thoughtful restoration, recognized with a 2012 Europa Nostra award, seamlessly bridges the past with the present, making the windmills a living monument rather than a static relic. The atmosphere at the windmills is one of tranquil reverence, infused with a sense of timelessness. As you wander the cobbled paths of Chora to reach them, the hustle of modern life fades, replaced by the soft rustle of the wind and the rhythmic creak of sails catching the breeze. The natural brick color of the windmills, distinct from the typical Aegean white, adds a rustic charm that feels both ancient and alive. Whether you visit during the golden hour, when the light casts a magical glow, or on a windy day when the sails are furled, the site exudes a quiet dignity. The knowledge that these windmills once powered the island’s economy and now serve as symbols of sustainable heritage adds depth to the experience, inviting reflection on the interplay of human...
