Krýsuvík is an awe-inspiring geothermal wonder nestled on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, just a 45-minute drive from Reykjavík. This surreal landscape is shaped by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where tectonic plates drift apart, bringing magma close to the surface and fueling intense geothermal activity.

The Seltún geothermal field, a highlight of Krýsuvík, features bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and vibrant mineral-stained earth in hues of red, yellow, and green. Visitors can safely explore this otherworldly terrain via well-maintained boardwalks and informative signage that explain the geological phenomena at play.

Nearby, the striking Grænavatn crater lake shimmers with a deep green hue, attributed to thermal algae and mineral crystals that absorb sunlight. The area also boasts the dramatic cliffs of Krýsuvíkurbjarg, renowned for their rich birdlife, including puffins and kittiwakes.

Krýsuvík offers a unique glimpse into Iceland’s dynamic geology and is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and photographers seeking to experience the raw beauty of the country’s...

Definitely a place I would recommend anyone visiting Iceland to visit! It is so close to Reykjavik and a very good example of the unique and different scenery one can find in the wonderful nature landscape of Iceland 🇮🇸🌋 This volcanic area isn't huge, but its very beautiful and easily accesible for anyone regardless of age or any walking inpediments ❤️ The zone has the very classic smell of volcanic gasses and sulfur, and plenty of craters and small bubbly fissures which definitely draws attention for anyone visiting. Also for those who like to trek there are some great hills with trekking tracks quite close to here 💪

This is also on the way to other cool sights in the Keflavik area, so its easy to get to and close to other interesting sights, such as the volcano which recently errupted or one of the biggest lakes...

Close OpenNot too far from the centre of Hafnarfjörður rest the remarkable solfatara fields of Krýsuvík, where you’ll discover an expanse of steaming volcanic vents and boiling hot springs, framed dramatically by a range of multi-coloured hills.

A well-maintained boardwalk winds through the bubbling and hissing geothermal area, with informative signage explaining all the important geological facts. The massive solfatara steaming away on the hilltop is a tempting attraction, even for those with tired legs, and the spectacular view of the surrounding area is well worth the extra legwork. As a short side-trip, you can also explore the coastline, where you’ll discover the stunning cliffs of Krýsuvíkurbjarg—an area renowned for its...
