Tomb of Sher Shah Suri, Sasaram The Tomb of Sher Shah Suri in Sasaram, Bihar, stands as a grand masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture. Constructed between 1540 and 1545 for Sher Shah himself, its completion on 16 August 1545, just three months after his death, signifies its historical importance. Built in red sandstone, this three-story octagonal mausoleum is perched on a square plinth amidst an artificial lake. Visitors reach it via a causeway connecting it to the mainland. The structure features a grand dome topped by ornamental chhatris (pavilions) at the corners of the second and third stories, and a verandah that encircles the tomb Richly carved arches and Quranic inscriptions, along with ornate tile work and lattice windows provide ventilation and illumination. Originally adorned with vibrant blue and yellow glazed tiles, remnants of which still persist. An early depiction by British artist Francis Swain Ward (1772ā73) displays a small pavillion at the summit, replaced later (1882ā83) by a more grand finial under restoration supervised by Joseph.
