On the Chakla Bazaar road leading onto Ved Road, one comes across this magnificient mausoleum where Khudawand Khan, Governor of Surat in 1546,lies buried. This place is among some of the most popular places in Surat having historical importance. As a consequence of continuous piratical raids by the Portuguese in the city of Surat, the city was experiencing a dark time which was tackled by the then Governor of Surat, Khudawand Khan. TOMB OF KHWAJA SAFAR SULEMANI, SURAT
खुदावन्द खान की उपाधि से विभूषित ख्वाजा सफर सुलेमानी, सूरत के गवर्नर थे। वे जन्म से एक यूरोपीय ईसाई थे और पाश्चात्य युद्ध शैली में प्रवीण थे। ख्वाजा सफर सुलेमानी की मृत्यु 24 जून, 1546 में तोप का गोला लगने के कारण हुई थी और उन्हें सूरत में दफनाया गया था। उनकी कब्र पर अहमदाबाद के इन्डो- सारसेनिक शैली में, संभवतः उनके ज्येष्ठ पुत्र रजब द्वारा एक सुन्दर मकबरा बनाया गया था जिसे बाद में सूरत का गवर्नर नियुक्त किया गया। इस स्मारक में एक छोटा पुरालेख है जिसमें लिखा है:

KHWAJA SAFAR SULEMANI WAS THE GOVERNOR OF SURAT UNDER THE TITLE OF KHUDAWAND KHAN. HE WAS BY BIRTH A EUROPEAN CHRISTIAN, AND HAD BEEN TRAINED IN THE ART OF WAR AS PRACTISED IN THE WEST. KHWAJA SAFAR SULEMANI WAS KILLED BY A CAΝΝΟΝ - BALL ON THE 24TH JUNE, 1546 AND BURIED AT SURAT.
