Visiting Jhansi Fort was like stepping into the pages of a history book—except the pages were made of stone, and the stories echoed through the wind. I had always heard tales of Rani Lakshmibai’s courage, but standing within the walls where she once fought made those stories come alive in a way I never expected. The moment I arrived, the fort’s grandeur struck me. Perched atop a hill, it looked majestic against the sky, its thick stone walls whispering secrets of battles long past. As I walked through the arched gateways, I imagined the clatter of swords and the rallying cries of soldiers. The fort wasn’t just a structure—it was a symbol of resistance, pride, and sacrifice. One of the most powerful moments was standing near the spot where Rani Lakshmibai is believed to have leapt on horseback with her child tied to her back. I paused there, trying to absorb the gravity of that act. It wasn’t just bravery—it was defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. That image stayed with me throughout the visit. I explored the museum inside the fort, which housed artifacts, weapons, and portraits that painted a vivid picture of the 1857 uprising. Each item told a story, and I found myself lingering longer than I expected, trying to piece together the lives behind the relics. The view from the ramparts was breathtaking. The city of Jhansi stretched out below, bustling and modern, yet wrapped in the legacy of its past. I stood there for a while, letting the breeze carry my thoughts. It felt like the fort was watching over the city, reminding it of its roots. As I left, I felt a mix of awe and reflection. Jhansi Fort wasn’t just a tourist destination—it was a place that stirred something deeper in me. It reminded me that history isn’t just about dates and events; it’s about people, choices, and the courage to stand up for what’s right.

Jhansi Fort or Jhansi ka Qila is a fortress situated on a large hilltop called Bangira, in Uttar Pradesh. It served as a stronghold of the Chandela Kings in Balwant Nagar (old name of Jhansi) from the 11th through the 17th century. There was another British fortress called the Star Fort which was located south of the main fortress of the town, at Jhansi Cantt. It was a primary British settlement in the town and had been constructed in accordance to a treaty of the British with the Newalkar Maharaja of Jhansi in 1804, through which Jhansi became subordinate to the British. The Star Fort was stormed by a Bengal infantry in June 1857, during the rebellion. The Jhansi fort is located in the middle of Jhansi city. It is 3 km from the Jhansi Railway station. The nearest airport is Gwalior, which is 103 km from Jhansi. The fort can also be reached by getting down at the Jhansi Museum Bus Stop. The fort standing in the hilly area shows how the North Indian style of fort construction differs from that of the South. In the South, most of the forts were built on the sea beds like the Bekal Fort in Kerala. The granite walls of the fort are between 16 and 20 feet thick and on the south side, the city walls meet. The south face of the fort is almost perpendicular.[6] There are 10 gates giving access to the fort. These are Khanderao Gate, Datia Gate, Bhanderi Gate(Rani laxmi bai escaped from this gate in 1857 battle), Unnao Gate, BadaGaon Gate, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orchha Gate, Saiyar Gate and Chand Gate. Notable sights in the fort are the Shiva temple, Ganesh temple at the entrance, and the Kadak Bijli cannon used in the uprising of 1857. The memorial board reminds one of the hair-raising feat of the Rani Lakshmibai in jumping on horseback from the fort. Nearby is the Rani Mahal, built in the later half of the 19th century where there is now an archaeological museum. The fort extends to a sprawling 15 acres (61,000 m2) and this colossal structure measures about 312m in length and 225m in width. On the whole, there are twenty-two supports with a mammoth strengthening wall surrounded by a moat on both sides. The shattered upholder on the eastern side was rebuilt by the British, who also added a floor to Panch Mahal.

Old Structure. Well Maintained. You can spend good amount of time on the top of fort. There are basement rooms where secret meeting used to happen.Jhansi fort is very well maintained and clean fort. One of the famous attractions in jhansi. Must recommend if you are in the city easily accessible by local transport. The Jhansi fort was a residence of Rani Lakshmibai, who fought with the British East India during the 1857 War of Independence and attained martyrdom. The fort was built by Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha in 1613CE. There are 10 entry gates, temples of lord Shiva and lord Ganesha, Karak Bijli Cannon, panch mahal, flag point and Jumping spot are the places of interest in the main fort area. Jumping spot, where rani fled away during the fight with Britishers. Jhansi is well connected by rail, road, and air. The nearest airport is Gwalior.Jhansi Fort was once in dilapidated condition but now after restoration and cleaning has become much much better than many other forts in terms of cleanliness, security and maintenance. Cost is Rs.25/pp and eatables are not allowed. Read a bit of history about the fort to enjoy it more. Iam traveling for memories I do photography as well and so I am always in seek for good place. Jhansi Fort is a magnificent and historical monument located in the city of Jhansi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India, known for its grandeur, architectural brilliance, and cultural significance. The fort holds a special place in the hearts of Indians, particularly the people of Jhansi, who take immense pride in their heritage and history. In this review, I will highlight some of the reasons why Jhansi Fort is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves history, culture, and architecture.

The first thing that strikes you about Jhansi Fort is its imposing structure. Built on a hilltop overlooking the city, the fort is an impressive sight, with its tall walls, imposing gates, and towering turrets. As you enter the fort, you are transported back in time, to an era of kings and queens, warriors and battles, and the grandeur of Indian architecture. The fort has several sections, each with its own unique features and history. From the Raj Mahal, which was the residence of the royal family, to the Rani Mahal, which was the palace of Rani Lakshmibai, the queen of Jhansi, the fort is a treasure trove of history and culture.

One of the highlights of Jhansi Fort is the Rani Mahal, which is the palace of Rani Lakshmibai. The palace is a beautiful example of Indian architecture, with intricate carvings, elaborate paintings, and a stunning courtyard. As you walk through the palace, you can almost imagine the queen herself, pacing the halls, planning her next move in the fight against the British. The palace also houses a museum, which has a collection of artifacts and exhibits related to the life and times of Rani Lakshmibai, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in Indian history.

Another noteworthy feature of Jhansi Fort is the Jhansi Museum, which is located inside the fort. The museum has a collection of artifacts from the ancient and medieval period, including weapons, armor, and paintings. The museum also has a collection of photographs and documents related to the Indian independence struggle, making it a great place to learn about India's history and culture.

Apart from its historical and cultural significance, Jhansi Fort is also a great place to soak in the natural beauty of the region. The fort is located on a hilltop, surrounded by lush green forests and hills. The view from the top of the fort is breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the city and the surrounding landscape.

In conclusion, Jhansi Fort is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Indian history, culture, and architecture. With its grandeur, historical significance, and natural beauty, the fort is an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover, or just someone looking for a unique travel experience, Jhansi Fort is a destination that you cannot...

Situated on a hill called Bangra, this hill fort was built by the Maharaja Veer Singh Ju Dev of Orchha Bundelkhand, in 1613 AD. After some time, it came under the control of the Mughals and then the Marathas. History of Marathas control on this Hill Fort is very interesting.

When Maha Raja Chhatrsal was helped by Peshwa Baji Rao-I, in March 1729 at Jaitpur Bundelkhand against the attack of Mohammed Khan Bangash who was a Bawan Hazari Sardar of Mughal Empire means the Commander of 52000 soldiers. With the support and intervention of Baji Rao-I, Maharaja Chhatrsal defeated Mohammad Khan Bangash then as a gratitude he gifted many things to Baji Rao-I including the Jhansi's hill fort and Jhansi.

After the death of the last king Gangadhar Rao, the fort came under the control of the British due to their usurpation policy. On 5 June 1857, the army which was recruited by the Rani, led by the Maharani Lakshmibai waged a fierce war against the British and once again the queen ascended the throne.

On 23 March 1858, the British laid siege to the fort under the leadership of Major General Hugh Rose and due to some of her treacherous chieftains, the queen was forced to leave the fort. British forces siege the Jhansi and captured the fort in March-April 1858 and Rani Laxmibai escaped joined the rebellions in Kalpi then moved to Gwalior and ultimately on 18th June 1858 she had to sacrifice her life for the sake of her country.

This fort is a witness to the unmatched bravery and sacrifice of the queen in the national freedom struggle. The construction period of the fort can be divided into three phases. Firstly, the construction done by the King of Orchha, secondly, the additions made by the Marathas and finally the changes made by the British.  A defence rampart was built around the fort and is equipped with big and small bastions and battlements at regular intervals and there are small and big holes in it to shoot arrows, spears etc. at the enemy from inside the fort. There are ten gates in the ramparts of the fort around which settlements were established later.

Apart from this, there are 4 small gates also. There are two temples inside the fort which are famous by the name of Shiva temple and Ganesh temple. Inside the fort are the tombs of Ghulam Gaus Khan, Moti Bai and Khuda Bakhsh (who were trusted aides of Rani Lakshmi Bai). The cannon named "Kadak Bijli" used in the freedom struggle is also worth seeing.

It's a very popular tourists attraction throughout the year. Cab or Car can reach the main entrance. Entry fee is...
