The Uparkot Caves are Buddhist cave type temples inside the Uparkot Fort complex. Unlike everything else in the complex, entrance to the caves is not free. There’s the usual foreigner pay 10x more than the local charging structure. The caves are two stories high (supposedly three, but only two have floors). The upper storey is mostly ruins, but you can still see what would’ve been water tanks supplying the temple. The next storey down is really just a hallway with pillars for support and open to both the upper and lower floor. The lower floor is accessible via a winding set of stairs from the middle floor. Once you get there you’ll see that it’s a Vihara, with cells for sitting and meditation. This floor has the best preserved pillars, decorations and carvings. Although the fine details of the carvings have largely faded and it takes a bit of imagination to see that they would’ve been exquisite originally. Unlike most Archeological Survey sites around India, there’s very little in the way to labels and descriptions apart from one board at the entrance. The text there is surprisingly similar to what’s on Wikipedia, so it feels like I could’ve just looked at some pictures and read it online. All in all, the visit would take about 30 minutes and I didn’t feel it was good value especially as it’s similarly priced for much better cave temples in Aurangabad and Mumbai. The multi-storey structure of the cave is distinctive and unique compared to other Buddhist cave temples, so I’m giving it one extra star. Otherwise it’s just average.

Visited Nov 2018. Unlike the Baba Pyare & Buddhist Caves at Junagadh, these caves have carvings & decorations. The caves are 'below ground', have two storeys. Difficult to photograph due to lack of space and poor light. There is a entrance fee. Definitely worth seeing.
