The Moppila Bay Harbor and Arakkal Mosque are near the fort. The fort is now well-maintained under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India. Tourists are allowed entry to the fort every day of the week between 8 AM to 6 PMIn August 1509 Almeida, refusing to recognize Afonso de Albuquerque's as the new Portuguese governor to supersede himself, arrested him in this fortress after having fought the naval Battle of Diu. Afonso de Albuquerque was released after six months' confinement, and become governor on the arrival of the grand-marshal of Portugal with a large fleet, in October 1509.[2]

The fort provided naval supplies for the Portuguese conquest of Goa and the Portuguese battles against Mamuluk. As the local Portuguese settlement at Kannur had no sources of revenue, the fort's expenses were met with funding from Goa, the seat of Portuguese rule in India.[1]

On 15 February 1663, the Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese.[1] They modernised the fort and built the bastions Hollandia, Zeelandia and Frieslandia that are the major features of the present structure. The original Portuguese fort was pulled down later. A painting of this fort and the fishing ferry behind it can be seen in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The Dutch sold the fort to king Ali Raja of Arakkal in 1772. In 1790 the British seized it and used it as their chief military station in Malabar until 1947.

The fort is in the Cannanore Cantonment area. It is fairly well preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. St Angelo's fort is a most important historical monument and a popular tourist attraction. Six Tourism Policeman are posted here for protection duty.

In 2015, thousands of cannonballs weighing several kilos were discovered from the Fort premises. The Archaeological Survey of India, which led the excavation, believes these were buried as part of military preparedness. The Arakkal Museum is a museum dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, India. The museum is actually a section of the Arakkalkettu (Arakkal Royal Palace). The durbar hall section of the palace has been converted into a museum by the Government of Kerala. It was opened in July 2005 after a Rs. 9,000,000 renovation.

Although renovated by the government, the Arakkalkettu is still owned by the Arakkal Royal Trust and does not fall under the control of the country's archaeology department, the Archaeological Survey of India. The government had taken a keen interest in preserving the heritage of the Arakkal Family, which had played a prominent role in the history of Malabar. A nominal entry fee is charged by the Arakkal Royal Trust from visitors to the museum. The Arakkal Museum is located in Ayikkara, next to the Kannur City. It is located 2-3 kilometres from Kannur town. The Kollengode House, Thrissur built in 1904 by Vasudeva Raja of Kollengode dynasty for his daughter, is one among those majestic edifices that have withstood the test of time. Now, this serves as a District Heritage Museum that showcases the most unique and exquisite mural paintings, artifacts from the Megalithic Age and a folklore museum. The unique styles of Kerala and Western architecture blend to give life to this royal edifice. The Heritage wall that borders the Museum is noted for its relief sculptures that display the Machattu Mamangam, one of the major festivals of the district, the history of Arnos Pathiri...

Arakkal Museum is located near kannur St. Angelo Fort.Visiting there you can see kannur kotta.St. Angelo's Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India and is on the Arabian sea coast about 2km from Kannur town. It was attacked in vain by the local Indian ruler Zamorin and kolathiri in the Siege of CannanoreThe Arakkal Kettu or Arakkal Royal House was the base of the Arakkal Royal Family, the most powerful Muslim royal family on the Malabar coast. The palace, with its wooden floors and antique furniture, offers a peep into the glorious past of the Arakkal rulers and the secular history of the Kannur region. The museum houses a great collection of artefacts as well as paintings and etchings, some from the iconic botanical treatise of the region, Hortus Malabaricus. However, better interpretation is needed to enhance the visitor's experience. Some of the labels and signboards are only in Malayalam and certain others do not offer any context, especially the gallery of paintings. That said, this museum is a must-see attraction in Kannur. The Arrakkal Museum is a museum dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. At their peak, Arakkal kingdom included Kannur town and southern Lakshadweep islands. Interestingly they followed the Matriarchal system of lineage. The museum is a section (Durbar Hall) of the Arakkal Royal Palace converted into a full fledged museum by Government of Kerala.

Don’t get deceived by the external looks of the traditional and simple two storied building from outside. Once you enter the Museum (especially the upper section), one gets transformed to a different environment with its ornate colored glass windows, heritage wooden floor and roof displaying the history of the Arakkal family and exhibiting Heritage Furniture, Utensils, Swords / other weaponry and beautiful paintings.

The Government of Kerala and Tourism Department has done an exemplary job in renovating this structure at its cost and returning it back to the Arakkal Family Trust to run it.

A nominal fee of Rs.20 for Adults and Rs.10 for kids is charged as entry fee and Rs.25 for Camera usage. One has to leave the footwear outside.
