NATIONAL MONUMENTS CHOWTARA PALACE - Moodabidare ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Chowta Palace is the residence of an ancient Royal Family known as the Chowta. It was a Jain dynasty who ruled certain parts of the Tulu Nadu or Mangaluru region from 12th to 18th century CE. Queen Abakka Chowta is the most known ruler of the Chowta dynasty and has the Ullal circle of Mangaluru named after her as Abbakka Rani Circle. Ullal was also the other capital of the Chowta dynasty along with Moodbidri. Queen Abbakka is credited to be the ‘First Woman Freedom Fighter of india’ for her fight against the invading Portuguese. For her bravery, she came to be known as ‘Abhaya Rani’ (The fearless queen). Descendants of the Chowta rulers still survive and inhabit the Chowtara Aramane (Chowta Palace) of Moodbidri, which is known for its ornate carvings such as the Nava Nari Kunjara (Nine Damsel Elephant). The Chowta Palace can be visited with prior permission from the palace office.
Read moreThis is a place you should not skip in your itiinerary. Once you enter the premises, head to the right side, which is where you will find the palace that is open to tourists, as the house on the left side is occupied by its residents and is private.
The 'palace' itself is reallly small, with just a courtyard to see. There are chambers that were once used as storage spaces. There is a 'diwan-i-aam' kind of space which used to be the meeting area for the ruler. But what you need to admire are the pillars and the history of the palace.
The pillars are made of jackfruit tree wood and are so intricately carved with breathtaking artistry. Some of the details are extremely well-preserved, while others have been destroyed by a black paint painted over them, in an attempt to, ironically, preserve them!
There is a list of the rulers at the entrance, which were majority women. And the history of this royal family goes back to the 1100s! That is some impressive history that is hardly known, so I highly recommend a visit to this place as it deserves greater recognition.
As it is a small place, it would take only about half an hour...
