NATIONAL MONUMENTS CHOWTARA PALACE - Moodabidare ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Chowta Palace is the residence of an ancient Royal Family known as the Chowta. It was a Jain dynasty who ruled certain parts of the Tulu Nadu or Mangaluru region from 12th to 18th century CE. Queen Abakka Chowta is the most known ruler of the Chowta dynasty and has the Ullal circle of Mangaluru named after her as Abbakka Rani Circle. Ullal was also the other capital of the Chowta dynasty along with Moodbidri. Queen Abbakka is credited to be the ‘First Woman Freedom Fighter of india’ for her fight against the invading Portuguese. For her bravery, she came to be known as ‘Abhaya Rani’ (The fearless queen). Descendants of the Chowta rulers still survive and inhabit the Chowtara Aramane (Chowta Palace) of Moodbidri, which is known for its ornate carvings such as the Nava Nari Kunjara (Nine Damsel Elephant). The Chowta Palace can be visited with prior permission from the palace office.

This is a place you should not skip in your itiinerary. Once you enter the premises, head to the right side, which is where you will find the palace that is open to tourists, as the house on the left side is occupied by its residents and is private.

The 'palace' itself is reallly small, with just a courtyard to see. There are chambers that were once used as storage spaces. There is a 'diwan-i-aam' kind of space which used to be the meeting area for the ruler. But what you need to admire are the pillars and the history of the palace.

The pillars are made of jackfruit tree wood and are so intricately carved with breathtaking artistry. Some of the details are extremely well-preserved, while others have been destroyed by a black paint painted over them, in an attempt to, ironically, preserve them!

There is a list of the rulers at the entrance, which were majority women. And the history of this royal family goes back to the 1100s! That is some impressive history that is hardly known, so I highly recommend a visit to this place as it deserves greater recognition.

As it is a small place, it would take only about half an hour...

This 400 year old palace is must visit place in Tulunadu. This palace built by chowta dynasty king bhojraya chowta 3 . Built in 1643 cr. . This very small place with rich history . Best part of this palace is . It’s pillar carvings . Pillar is made of jackfruit tree and in every pillar there is story they have tried to tell and well carved . Top class architecture ❤️.

Ramayan, vishu gods avatar , bramha , and Tulu nadu culture are the main story in these pillar . Over year some pillars are distroyed . . Just enjoy the view and palace guard very nice if u ask him he will explain every story and rich history of the palace . . Imp instructions:- . It’s a private property so plz maintain peace. No entry fees Plz don’t touch the pillars . Ask palace guard for full information. And for meaning of...

3 star for the overall place. Architectural works :- 5 star. But this is a small house which has few rooms which ain't accessible or not much attractive. But has a long set of pillars(posted photo below) which has very attractive and skilled carvings. Has a old car parked outside and well maintained house. Over all time consumed 15min. Theres a gaurd sitting who won't bother to explain about the history.. but yes they have mentioned about it over banner as you enter the palace.
