Colonel Bailey's Dungeon Built during the rule of Tipu Sultan, Colonel Bailey's Dungeon is named after a British prisoner who died here in the year 1780. You can come here to see for real how dark and grisly prisons can be. Located 19 Km away from Mysore city, it is situated in Srirangapatna. You can hardly spot anything inside the dungeon in a precise manner as it seems uncanny and rather ghostly from the ground level. However, the way to the dungeon is built in quite an appealing manner. This attraction near Mysore contains various arches and one can go through them to explore the prison carefully. A cannon can be spotted inside this place around which different theories were woven. The old age marks remaining on the walls and leftover weapons remind you of dark days of history when human rights were not administered on prisoners. Read moreHow best to torture your prisoners, especially the ones you detest thoroughly or are important to your enemies? Search no more, Colonel Bailey's dungeon is right here... Oh... Where is it? Well, that is precisely the impact of its geographic location. It is located at a much lower area, one you cannot see easily from the fort walls. Well, he could have just picked the basement. Why that location specifically? Simple again. It is located right next to the Cauvery. In the left corner of the dungeon, you can notice an aqueduct. Water from the Cauvery entered the dungeon from there, always ensuring that the prisoners were covered 2 feet in water. But... Physical torture isn't enough. It isn't fun. Psychological torture, on the other hand, well, it has a greater impact. Now, notice the ceiling. It is constructed in a way to make you feel oppressed. The ceiling feels like it could close down on you, destroy you, leaving you in pieces. Well, there you have it. Physical and psychological torture- the fascinating combo Colonel Bailey couldn't escape from while nobody could find him easily.... Until, people launched the Finding Bailey mission! Honestly speaking though, all the parts discussed here are fascinating to observe and feel. You might only spend five minutes there but those five minutes could increase your appreciation of Tipu Sultan, a must try indeed. Ps... If you notice the steps they used in the past (I'm going to keep the location a secret), try entering the dungeon from there. You can feel regal, cool and so many more...
Read moreHad visited the Dungeon before but had no idea about the history. We hired a guide (old man with 40yrs experience with an access bike) this time who explained about the history beautifully...
The steps which leads to the Dungeon is recently built for tourists...
When you take the 1st step (new ones), look to the far right... U will find 3 steps in the corner (old steps to the Dungeon).
When u get to the last few steps (new ones) u will find few more steps on the wall (right of u...) which can't be climbed without someone else's help!
These old steps were the ones used in earlier days so that prisoners don't escape... (climb down to experience the majestic idea...)
The prisoners were tied with chains according to their height onto the stones with holes... The height increases gradually... (watch carefully). The water used to be filled in Dungeon from the Cauvery river... The draining of water was beautifully planned since water from Dungeon needs to go back to the river itself... What a planning without any modern technologies...
A secret passage from Palace (now closed by Govt) for Tipu to visit the prisoners of Dungeon. The Canon u find inside fell from the top of the roof because of weight... Lots more... Keep...
