An island surrounded by the Cauvery River, Nisargadhama is a picturesque picnic spot near Kushalnagar in the district of Kodagu in Karnataka. This beautiful ecological part is strategically situated between 25 kms from Madikeri and 3 kms from Kushalngar. Cauvery Nisargadhama as the name suggests is an eco-tourism project undertaken by the Forest Department in 1988.

Spread over 65 acres of dense vegetation, this island was formed when Kaveri split into two at Nisargdhama. Originating in Talacauvery, at the foot of Brahmagiri hills, the Cauvery River has created a cluster of five islets, of which Nisargadhama is the biggest and most picturesque.
The island is predominantly covered by lush green bamboo groves, teak, sandalwood and many streams flow through it as well.
It is very good site for seeing parakeets, bee eaters and woodpeckers and a variety of butterflies. Elephants, deer, rabbits and peacocks are some other animals that can be seen at this island.
At the entrance one can see, a huge hanging wooden bridge tied to trees at both the ends that connects the islet to the mainland. A walking through this bridge with the serene river flowing below, offers the tourists an unprecedented experience. Below, one can watch fishes moving ahead in formation.
Small play parks for children and orchidarium are part of the island. The Orchidarium has a collection of exquisite orchids that are endemic to the Coorg region. For animal lovers, there is a deer park inside the premises of the of the island where one can see spotted deer and stags. Machans or tree top watchtowers are made in between, allowing a commanding view of the surroundings. There is a tree house which is made fully with wood and bamboo can be seen and one can see people pose for a photo over this tree house. One should climb up and down through the shaking wooden ladder.
An information centre inside the island which provides details about the place and the wildlife. Also, nearby, a small canteen to provide food and drinks to the tourists.
The best way to enjoy the calm and gorgeous ambience is to take a stroll along the picturesque stretch of the banks of the river. Visitors are allowed to get into water at few safe points along the river since the river flows with very strong currents here. Undoubtedly this is the most beautiful location of the whole island, eventhough, it is rocky and sligtly slippery. One can see massive roots and boulders and kids enjoy a bath under the gushing water. Other striking feature of the island are the shady meandering footpath, offering quiet solitary walks. Note : Since, there there are plenty of monkey's around, be extra careful when moving with kids and carrying food.
