The owner is visibly very passionate about his garden, and does a decent job in explaining most of the spices/plants that he has, and we really enjoyed tasting random things that he offered. It added a lot of personal touch to the tour. He wasn't shy or hasty about letting us explore and ask questions or taste fruits growing in his garden, we loved that bit of the tour. However, the positives end here.
Post tour, we went to the store to buy spices and right away the whole vibe changes. The shop is run by some young guys who are quite cunning and rude. We found one salesperson who seemed nice/reasonable, and when asked about the exorbitant prices he casually mentions that those prices are for foreigners and that he would give us a better deal. We negotiated prices for some spices and they did shady things like go to the back room to weigh and pack the spices, and wouldn't let us keep an eye (we had heard horror stories of how some places switch to old/bad stock and didn't want to take any risk). Another guy joins later on, and realizes that we are NRIs, and immediately chastises our sales guy (in his local language) for negotiating too low and takes him out of the picture and sends someone else to deal with us, and they started to give excuses for why some products were now non-negotiable (even tho we had agreed previously) and that they couldn't speak Hindi (only English, Italian, German eye roll we had heard them talk in hindi too); yet another guy comes and pressures us to decide soon for other purchases and leave since other customers had watched us negotiate (including foreigners) and they didn't want others to follow suit. We really despise any place/store that sets separate prices for Indians vs foreigners and takes unfair advantage of tourists. We later went to the Thekkady market and were able to find spices at a reasonable rate, and would recommend you do the same instead of buying anything at this...
Read moreBenny has 5 generations of knowledge in countless categories from farming, agriculture, Ayurveda, sustainably, and building and it clearly shows. We were guests in one of his treehouse rooms and it was a great experience. We found the room on Airbnb and honestly thought it was just a hotel room but it was more guesthouse experience and we were welcomed into the family. His wife cooked delicious Keralan breakfast for us and they made sure to check with any preferences. They will allow as much privacy or immersion as you’d like. The room was clean and hot bucket shower with a nice balcony area for sitting. There was also a tour of his property which his knowledge and passion is clearly obvious and he’ll take time for any question. He likes to engage in conversations on sustainability also so he not only cares about his own business, but a better world for...
