A Timeless Gem of Faith and History: Vallarpadam Basilica.

Visiting the Vallarpadam Basilica was a truly awe-inspiring experience. As I stepped foot into this magnificent church, I could feel the weight of its history and the significance it holds for countless believers. This review attempts to capture the essence of this remarkable place and its importance to both the faithful and those interested in history.

The first thing that struck me was the architectural splendor of the basilica. Its imposing structure, adorned with intricate detailing and vibrant colors, creates an atmosphere that is both majestic and inviting. The moment you enter, you're transported to a realm where art and spirituality intertwine, leaving you in awe of the human capability to create such marvels.

Beyond its physical beauty, the Vallarpadam Basilica carries a profound historical significance. It is believed to be one of the oldest churches in India, with roots dating back to the 16th century. This sanctuary has witnessed centuries of prayers, miracles, and devotion, making it a living testament to the unwavering faith of generations past and present.

One cannot overlook the spiritual ambiance that envelops this sacred place. The hushed whispers of prayers, the flickering candles, and the serene atmosphere create a sense of tranquility that touches the depths of one's soul. Whether you are a believer or not, there is an undeniable serenity that pervades the air, allowing visitors to find solace and introspection amidst the chaos of the outside world.

The Vallarpadam Basilica is not just a place of worship; it is a beacon of hope and healing. It is renowned for its devotion to the Virgin Mary and is often referred to as the "Lourdes of the East." Pilgrims from far and wide come seeking solace, guidance, and miracles. It is heartening to witness the countless testimonials of individuals whose prayers were answered, further cementing the basilica's reputation as a spiritual sanctuary.

In addition to its religious significance, the basilica's location on the serene Vallarpadam Island adds to its allure. Surrounded by picturesque views of the backwaters, the church offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is a place where one can immerse themselves in nature's beauty and find solace in the tranquility it provides.

Whether you are a devout Catholic, a history enthusiast, or simply seeking a moment of respite, the Vallarpadam Basilica is a must-visit. It is a testament to the power of faith, the grandeur of human creativity, and the enduring legacy of our shared history. As I left the basilica, I carried with me a sense of reverence and gratitude for having experienced such a...

The National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Vallarpadam is a Catholic Church acknowledged as the Lourdes of Kerala. The Basilica is situated on a small Island in the backwaters of Vallarpadam. Way back, we had to take a ferry to get to Vallarpadam. This ferry ride just added flavor to the pilgrimage, with pilgrims having to walk a short distance from the ferry landing to get to the Church. The ferry ride and the short walk through coconut groves was indeed the start of a prayerful visit to the Basilica.

Last week I visited the Basilica. Now the Goshree Bridge give access to the island, but driving through the bridge was not a pleasant experience due to the traffic blocks and congestion.

The Basilica has ample parking space and the surrounding was very clean and neat. I found a group of volunteers sweeping and cleaning the premises. They might have been doing it as an offering. Anyway, their effort added to the luster of the pilgrimage. The inside of the Basilica is indeed a “House of Prayer for all people”. I saw people from many religions come in pray and make offering very reverently. Nobody was present to monitor the visitors, yet every pilgrim was careful to maintain and contribute to the prayerful atmosphere of the church.

Out of curiosity, I found out that the Basilica is popularly known as the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom – Vallarpadam. The name “Lady of Ransom” was given due to the several miracles that happened in the 17th century where Icons were preserved intact during a flood and a mother and child rescued during a storm after they called out to Mother Mary for help.

The Rosary Garden is a sight to behold and gives the pilgrim an impetus to pray. The watchtower on top of the church is a must visit for the brave. The view from the top is spectacular.

One of my visits was during the 9-day celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom September 16-24. During this season, the entire island of Vallarpadam is decked in colour, festoons, ribbons etc. Despite the heavy rush of devotees, the church remains peaceful befitting a House of prayer.

All said and done, I must reiterate that the Basilica offers a very peaceful, prayerful and meaningful pilgrimage experience. The public worship of the Holy Mass and the Novena drawn large crowds all joining in the prayer making it a powerful healing experience.

A must visit and pray experience, not to be missed. Even with a bridge, I still would recommend the ferry ride through the backwaters and the short walk to the...

Around 5 million people visit the basilica every year. People from all parts of the world irrespective of caste or creed go to the church to seek the blessings of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, popularly known as "Vallarpadathamma" The Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom is located in the middle of Vallarpadam, a small idyllic island on the Vembanad lake. Earlier accessible only by boat, it is now linked to mainland Ernakulam and the islands of Bolghatty, Mulavukad and Vypin by three adjacent bridges called the Goshree bridges. The Church itself is a magnificent, stately building in white, set in spotlessly clean rambling grounds surrounded by beautiful backwaters. The Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, Vallarpadam, Ernakulam has a history going back some 500 years! According to records, this church was established in 1524 by Portuguese missionaries who came to Cochin with Vasco da Gama. They established a chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit with a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the form of Our Lady of Ransom. Apparently this is the first church in Asia dedicated to the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, this chapel was washed away by flood waters in 1676. The picture of Our Lady of Ransom too was carried away by the floods. Legend has it that the picture of Our Lady of Ransom was retrieved from the waters by the Diwan of the Maharaja of Cochin - Paliyath Raman Valiyachan, who was himself a devotee of Our Lady of Ransom. Diwan Valiyachan donated his land for construction of a new church for the divine mother and installed a 'Kedavilakku' (perpetual lamp) in the church. To this day, almost 350 years later, his descendants of the Paliyath family continue the tradition of keeping this perpetual lamp burning! Our Lady of Ransom in this church is known amongst the local people as "Vallarpadathamma" (which translates to "The Mother of Vallarpadam"). Vallarpadathamma is believed to have miraculously saved her devotees several times from violent storms.

In Vallarpadam there was a young Nair lady named Meenakshi Amma, who was a member of a noble family called Palliyil Veedu. Together with her son she was sailing to Mattancherry. There arose a storm and the boat capsized. Meenakshi Amma and her son went deep down into the backwater. She promised to devote the rest of her life to Mary’s service if she and her child were saved. It was a promise she kept. On the third day, as per instructions in a dream, the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Miguel Correa, asked the fishermen to cast net in the river, and Meenakshi Amma and her son were rescued. After her death, the church put up the picture of Meenakshiamma and her child alongside the painting of Mary.
