Read moreThe National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Vallarpadam is a Catholic Church acknowledged as the Lourdes of Kerala. The Basilica is situated on a small Island in the backwaters of Vallarpadam. Way back, we had to take a ferry to get to Vallarpadam. This ferry ride just added flavor to the pilgrimage, with pilgrims having to walk a short distance from the ferry landing to get to the Church. The ferry ride and the short walk through coconut groves was indeed the start of a prayerful visit to the Basilica.
Last week I visited the Basilica. Now the Goshree Bridge give access to the island, but driving through the bridge was not a pleasant experience due to the traffic blocks and congestion.
The Basilica has ample parking space and the surrounding was very clean and neat. I found a group of volunteers sweeping and cleaning the premises. They might have been doing it as an offering. Anyway, their effort added to the luster of the pilgrimage. The inside of the Basilica is indeed a “House of Prayer for all people”. I saw people from many religions come in pray and make offering very reverently. Nobody was present to monitor the visitors, yet every pilgrim was careful to maintain and contribute to the prayerful atmosphere of the church.
Out of curiosity, I found out that the Basilica is popularly known as the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom – Vallarpadam. The name “Lady of Ransom” was given due to the several miracles that happened in the 17th century where Icons were preserved intact during a flood and a mother and child rescued during a storm after they called out to Mother Mary for help.
The Rosary Garden is a sight to behold and gives the pilgrim an impetus to pray. The watchtower on top of the church is a must visit for the brave. The view from the top is spectacular.
One of my visits was during the 9-day celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom September 16-24. During this season, the entire island of Vallarpadam is decked in colour, festoons, ribbons etc. Despite the heavy rush of devotees, the church remains peaceful befitting a House of prayer.
All said and done, I must reiterate that the Basilica offers a very peaceful, prayerful and meaningful pilgrimage experience. The public worship of the Holy Mass and the Novena drawn large crowds all joining in the prayer making it a powerful healing experience.
A must visit and pray experience, not to be missed. Even with a bridge, I still would recommend the ferry ride through the backwaters and the short walk to the...
