St Joseph's Monastery, Mannanam is the place where St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate Congregation, the first indigenous Catholic religious congregation. It's now spread around the whole world giving spiritual leadership with more than three thousand members. St. Chavara was the transformative leader who worked hard to transform the society. He established the training centre for the priests, first printing press for Catholics, first Sanskrit school, brought children from the low casts to study with the upper casts, arranged midday meals for the children, and many other activities to transform the society.
