This Grade 3 Heritage Site is a unique example of the Maratha Wada Architecture. You cannot visit this Wada without the owner's permission. Built for Sardar Ambaji Purandare, this huge wada complex has its own Ganpati Mandir, two courtyards, a howd (water cistern), toilets, and a private well. You can see fortified walls, iron-spiked gate and guard towers which reflect the defensive architecture. As this wada is old and dilapidated, lot of horror films are shot here-most recently- Tumbbad. I wish INTACH can restore and bring back the glory of Purandare Wada.

This wada is located in between saswad city there are lot of buildings, there are some facts about this wada people dont know there is lot of gold stored inside this wada sounds funny but true i know this facts because its my village and i stay there from childhood and gathered lot of information, there are lots of movie shoots in this wada the latest and best TUMBAD if you didn't watch yet go experience some real stuff from Bollywood. Hence there are lot more ypu can google and read the whole history. Also known for Abasaheb wada.

Sardar Purandare Wada is said to be the oldest standing structure in Maharashtra built in 1710. It was the grand residence (Wada) built by Ambaji Purandare, a deewan of the Peshwas, Balaji Vishwanath and Bajirao I. Purandare was the governer of Saswad area during Peshwa rule of Maratha Kingdom. Right now it is in dilapidated condition but one can only imagine how huge it was when it was built. Also according to some reports, some part of the movie 'Tumbaad' was also shot here. This hisoric site is few kilometres away from Pune, in the town of Saswad. Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra, there is a lot of traditional architecture in and around the city. This wada (traditional dwelling) is located in the heart of Saswad, which is about 30 kilometers from Pune. Just from a distance, you could see this huge fortified wada towering over the modern buildings. There is an old Ganpati Mandir built by Ambaji Purandare which is accessible for all through the outside. the main gate to a vast ground on the right side and the fortified walls surrounding the wada, with bastions and an iron-spiked gate on the left. This leads into a dark devdi(antechamber), with a ceiling of about 7m.

This led to the main chowk (courtyard) of the wada. Although the wada was dilapidated, one could see how grand it was when it was built. They were shooting the recently released period horror film Tumbbad! You can see a lot of this wada in the movie.and also shoot marathi serial "RAJA SHIVCHATRAPATI" and marathi film "Bhutacha Bhau"

This room led to the terrace- the terrace has a passage that runs along the entire complex with steps to guard towers and the fortified basalt walls. I walked along precariously as in many places the roof had collapsed in and the passage had given away. The view from up here is simply breathtaking, see clearly for miles! basements- the walls had fallen in but people say that these were secret passages that connected the wada to Jadhavgadh, which is about 7km away- that means an hour and a half walk through a tunnel.

शिवशाही व पेशवाईच्या ऐतिहसिक खुणा मध्ये किल्ले पुरंदरे व नजीकच्या सासवडचा कर्हेकाठ खूप महत्त्वपूर्ण आहे. येथील सासवड नगरीतील जुन्या एक – एका वाड्याला तेवढीच ऐतिहासिक पार्श्वभूमी आहे पुण्याचा शनिवारवाडा ज्या वाड्याच्या रचनेवरून बेतला… तो शनिवारवाडाच्या अगोदर वीस वर्ष बांधलेला येथील ‘आबासाहेब पुरंदरे वाडा’ म्हणजे या नगरीची चिरेबंदी सौदंर्यच आहे! नावः पुरंदरे वाडा ठिकाणः सासवड अंतरः सासवडपासून १ किमी. कसे जाल? सासवडपासून रिक्षा उपलब्ध आबासाहेब पुरंदरे वाड्याचे पुढे खिंडार पडले व थोडी पडझड झाली, तरी काही भाग सुस्थितीत आहे. तटबंदी मजबूत आहे. त्यामुळे आताचे मालक जय पुरंदरे करू इच्छित असलेले ऐतिहसिक संग्रहालय या वाड्यात साकारले, तर पुन्हा या वैभवला झळाळी मिळेल!! कर्हेकाठवरील पुरंदरे घराण्याचे संस्थापक व पेशव्यांचे दिवाण अंबाजीपंत पुरंदरे यांनी १७१० मध्ये हा पुरंदरे वाडा बांधला. ते साताराचे शाहू महाराज यांचे मुतालिकही होते. शिवाजी महाराजांच्या काळात कुलकर्णी वतनदार म्हणून त्रिंबक पुरंदरे होते. शाहूंना गादीवर बसविण्यात या अंबाजीपंत पुरंदरे यांनी बाळाजी विश्वनाथ भट (पेशवे) यांच्यासह आघाडी घेतली होती. हा पुरंदरे वाडा चार एकर क्षेत्रावर सात चौकी पद्धतीने बांधला आहे. चाळीस हजार चौरस फुटाचे बांधकाम यात आहे. तीनशे वर्षापुर्वी कर्हेकाठाची खडकाळ जागा खास निवडून हा चिरेबंद तटबंदीचा व आत चारमजाळी असलेला वाडा बांधला. पुरंदरे यांचे पूर्वज पुर्वी हत्तिवरुन अंबारीतून यायचे. त्यामुळे बाहेरचा मुख्य दरवाजा अंबारीसह हत्ती आत येईल, एवढा होता. एखाद्या किल्ल्याचे वा गढीचे प्रवेशद्वार वाटावे असे या वाड्याचे आतील मुख्य प्रवेशद्वार आहे. त्याला बुरूज, दगडात कोरलेल्या निरक्षण खाचा, लाकडी दारावर लोखंडी संरक्षक भलेमोठे खीले, दगड – लाकूड – लोखंड – शिसे यांचे जोड प्रत्येक ठिकाणी आजही मजबूत आहेत. वाड्यात जेवढे बांधकाम वर दिसते. तेवढेच जागा तळघरांनी व्यापली आहे. वाड्यात आड, विहीर, भुयारे, टेहळणी मनोरे चार दिशेला चार आहेत. ते आजही दिसतात. फक्त भुयारे कुठपर्यंत जातात, याची खात्री झाली नाही. तीनशे वर्षापूर्वीची रंगीत भित्तीचित्रे आजही आहेत; असे जय पुरंदर यांनी सांगितले आहे. त्यांच्या बंधुनी वाड्याचा काही निकामी भाग उतरविला. तो भाग वगळता इतर ठिकाणी वास्तु उभी आहे. याची दुरुस्ती करून व काही भागाचे नूतनीकरण करून येथे शिवशाहीर आबासाहेब पुरंदरे यांच्या सल्ल्याने ऐतिहसिक संग्रहालय करण्याचा मनोदय व्यक्तीगतरित्या जय पुरंदरे यांनी...
