Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is a hidden gem nestled on the outskirts of Mumbai, a sanctuary that left me awestruck with its natural beauty and diverse avian life. As an avid nature enthusiast, visiting this sanctuary was an absolute treat for my senses. From the moment I stepped foot into the sanctuary, I was captivated by the breathtaking sights and sounds that surrounded me. The expansive creek, lush mangroves, and vibrant foliage create a tranquil atmosphere that instantly transports you to a different world. The sanctuary's well-maintained trails and observation points allowed me to explore the area at my own pace and get up close to the mesmerizing beauty of the flamingos. Speaking of flamingos, they are the true stars of the sanctuary. Witnessing these majestic birds in their natural habitat is an experience like no other. The vibrant hues of pink and white, coupled with their graceful movements, make for an awe-inspiring spectacle. Watching flocks of flamingos take flight in unison is a sight that will forever be etched in my memory. The sanctuary not only offers an incredible bird-watching experience but also serves as a habitat for a wide variety of other avian species. During my visit, I spotted herons, egrets, pelicans, and several migratory birds, each adding to the sanctuary's rich biodiversity. The knowledgeable and friendly staff members were more than happy to share their insights about the various bird species, making the experience educational as well as enjoyable. What sets Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary apart is its commitment to conservation and eco-tourism. The sanctuary actively promotes awareness about the importance of preserving mangroves and protecting the delicate ecosystem. The efforts made to maintain the cleanliness and ecological balance of the area are commendable. It's heartening to see an organization dedicated to safeguarding nature's treasures. For those seeking solace in the lap of nature, Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is a haven worth visiting. Whether you're a seasoned bird-watcher or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world, this sanctuary will leave you spellbound. I highly recommend planning a trip to Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary and immersing yourself in its serene and captivating ambiance. Note: It's always advisable to check the current regulations and any specific guidelines or timings before planning a visit to...

I visited the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary on January 2, 2024. I had wanted to visit this sanctuary for a long time, however, had a hard time finding info about it- especially boat timings and accessibility. So, below I'm sharing what I learned today! Overall, I think this is a good place to visit and would recommend it to those who love birds, wildlife, and ecology.

When you arrive, there is a small visitor center (with a small gift shop), and an interpretation center. The exhibit at the interpretation was informative and well done. There was a documentary in either English or Marathi, and interactive elements. The staff went out of their way to put the film on for me even though there were very few visitors that day. -From the visitor/interpretation center it is about a 5-7 minute walk to the creek and boat jetty. The first 2-3 minutes are a flat wide gravel pathway, and the last 3-4 minutes are on a floating dock. The floating dock is not that accessible for persons with disabilities and senior citizens as it moves when there is high tide, and there are some steep steps up and down. There are army personnel posted there, and they mentioned to me that in the case of a senior citizen or persons with disabilities wanted to take a boat ride, they could drive a car the length of the gravel walkway, and the army personnel could offer assistance on the floating walkway. They mentioned that if this was needed, one should call and check with the office in advance. This information is definitely not a guarantee, however, I wanted to provide this info in case it might help people visit. -There are daily boat rides HOWEVER the times are not fixed. The times are decided by when the high tide ends and the low tide begins. On January 2nd, it was 3 PM. For this information, call in advance. The boat ride is 1 hour, and costs 650 on weekends and 475 on weekdays. -FINALLY the Flamingos! From the jetty itself I could not see any flamingos. From the boat, there were ample sightings of flamingos the first half of the ride. They provided binoculars which was great as the boat does not go particularly close to the flamingos. The personnel on the boat offered some bird and ecology guidance...

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is located near Airoli, Navi Mumbai. It is a unique destination known for its beautiful flamingos and peaceful natural surroundings. The sanctuary is one of the few places in India where you can watch flamingos in their natural habitat.

One of the highlights of this sanctuary is its Flamingo Museum. The museum provides detailed information about flamingos that migrate here from different countries every year. It also displays models and facts about other birds and fishes found in the creek. Visitors can learn about the flamingos' habitat, food, migration patterns, and other interesting facts.

A special feature of the museum is an audio setup where you can hear the sounds of specific birds and animals. The museum also educates visitors about pollution in the creek, its harmful effects, and ways to prevent it. Overall, it is a great educational initiative.

The museum is located at the entrance of the sanctuary. From there, you walk around 200–300 meters through mangroves to reach the flamingo viewing area. On the way, there is a small room displaying the bones of various animals, which adds to the learning experience.

Clean washrooms are available along the path. As the sanctuary lies along the creek, a bamboo bridge has been built for visitors to walk safely towards the viewing point. At the end of the bridge, there is a bamboo platform where you can watch the flamingos in their natural environment. It is a surreal and peaceful experience to see these beautiful birds up close.

This place is perfect for both education and sightseeing and is highly recommended for students, families, and bird lovers. It is easily accessible by...

Had a chance to Visit Flamingo Creek , Thane and it was the most disappointing experience. 1)The place, supposedly a sanctuary for flamingos, doesn’t have a single bird in sight. 2)The boat rides are non-functional, the bridge is in a state of disrepair, and basic facilities are  neglected. 3) Out of the two ticket counters, one looks like a municipal dustbin, littered with plastic packets, while the other has been turned into a storage area for kids' bicycles by the staff. In fact the staff is using a ticket room to park kids' bikes. Maybe to save parking charges. 4)Adding to the frustration, the staff demand an absurd parking fee of ₹190 , higher than what most malls or businesses charge ,on top of ₹30 for entry. And what does one get in return? To see a deserted, neglected space with nothing to see. When questioned about the poor state of the property, the staff behaves rudely  asking us to leave and claiming they’re not responsible for the management and they are not promoting the place on google. To make matters worse, Google consistently shows updated opening hours for this park, giving travelers false hope. Visitors drive for hours only to find the park closed or in shambles, adding to the disappointment. This site, likely managed by the Forest Department, reflects a severe misuse of public funds. With no tourists, zero maintenance, and a complete lack of accountability, it’s a waste of resources and a letdown for taxpayers. If this place were managed by a private operator or in another country, it would undoubtedly be a thriving, well-maintained attraction. In its current state, it’s nothing short of a disgrace.
