This beautiful building amidst the beautiful hills of Nainital attracts tourists. I also parked my car in its compound as this Church is located in Mallital near High Court. I looked around the building of this beautiful church but did not see anyone there and the church was locked. Then a local person told me that the foundation of this church was laid by a priest named Wilson of Calcutta in 1844 and it was completed in 1846 which is also written outside the church. Due to the construction, the priest had to stay in an unfinished cottage in the nearby forest, due to which this church got its name. This St. John in the Wilderness church was built during the British Raj and till India became independent, Nainital was the favorite retreat of prominent British citizens and most of the British followers used to come to this church for prayers. This church is dedicated to St. John. Its architecture is an example of neo-Gothic architecture. The calm and divine atmosphere makes this church special. Coloured glass in the windows, three-storey bell tower, porch based on arches, arched door for entry into the prayer hall, stone-made and tiled roof etc. are the main features. My visit was after the Corona period, so I did not find the church open and no caretaker was seen. It is certain that St. John in the Wilderness is an attractive church and I am also thankful to the local person who shared so much information.

Like its namesake in Dharamshala, this church stands in the midst of a grove of deodar trees. Also, like the Dharamshala church, this is an old one - it dates back to 1844 and is still in use, being part of the Church of North India. We visited on a Sunday morning, around 10 AM. The church was closed and there was nobody around to let us in so that we could have a look. Church service is (according to a sign outside) at 4 PM on Sundays; we could not come back for this, so contented ourselves with looking at the church from the outside. It's a beautiful and atmospheric old building, with stained glass in a rose window, behind the altar, and along the sides. It seems, at least on the outside, to be poorly maintained, with peeling paint, overgrown with weeds, and with quite a lot of garbage - plastic wrappers and similar rubbish - strewn nearby. A pity.

St. John in the wilderness is an Anglican church in India and is one of the oldest buildings in Nainital. The site was chosen and approved in 1844 by Bishop Daniel Wilson. The corner stone was laid in October 1846 and the plans were made by Captain Young at the cost of Rs 15,000 raised from private subscriptions and pew rents. Built in a Gothic style, it was inaugurated on 2 April 1848. A memorial in the church is to those killed in the 1880 landslip. The cemetery in the church has graves from 1845 to around 1922 with the last burial being of Sir George Knox. The graves include those of the mother and father of Jim Corbett.

At a distance of 3 km from Tallital Bus Stand & 1.5 km from Nainital Lake, St John Wilderness Church is located adjacent to the High Court of Uttarakhand at Mallital in Nainital.

St. John in the Wilderness is one of the oldest and finest churches in Nainital. The Church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. This Anglican Church was built in 1846 and is one of the earliest buildings erected in Nainital. As per the legend, Daniel Wilson, the Bishop of Kolkata visited Nainital in 1844 to lay the foundation of this church. During his visit, he fell ill and had to stay in an unfinished house which was on the edge of the forest. Hence, the church got the name of St John Wilderness Church.

The church was built in Neo Gothic style, amidst pine and deodar trees on the hilltop. The church is also famous for its stained-glass windows. It is said that Jim Corbett worshipped here during his tenure in the British army and was a great follower of this Church. St John Wilderness Church contains a brass memorial to the victims of famous 1880 landslide.

Never go to this place if you love your life. This place is haunted. If you wanna know you can go watch beer biceps podcast on YouTube where Pooja Vijay,a psychic, shares her real life experience when she went there to explore the chruch with her team (incl Sarbajeet Mohanty, expert in paranormal investigator) there are nasty demons outside (eg shape shifters demons which can change their forms) and innocent souls are trapped inside . Those demons feed on the souls inside the church and don't want them to leave from there. That demon also messed up with her coming in her dreams taking different forms and haunting her taking advantages of her lows and weaknesses in her life ,tried to overpower her & make her weak. So if you value your peace stay away from here. I myself am going to Nainital this weekend but I'll make sure I'm miles away from this wierd place. Peace out and positivity to everyone.May negativity be far far away from...
