In India, every place, every temple has a thrilling back story. The story of khidkaleshwar temple dates back to the mahabharat period and folklore recites that this temple was brought into existence by Yudhishthir while the Pandavas were in the Agyatwas and hiding from Kaurav's. Pandavas were taking refuge near the khidhkali lake, when Yudhishthir became worried that they might have been spotted by Duryodhana's informant. At that time the place was surrounded by a dense forest and hills and it would take them weeks to get out of the Jungle and find a new place for hiding. Yudhishthir, driven by his fear, established shivling near the Khidkali lake and started worshiping lord Shiva, seeking his protection. Locals said that it rained for nearly 10 days from that day on flooding the entire valley and cutting off the place from the surrounding areas. The Pandavas took refuge under the vat vrichha. 11th day the rain stopped and Pandvas began their journey to the north. The present day temple was constructed in the 17th century by maratha rulers. In the temple premises you can see some of the architectural remains of that period. A small crocodile and elegant structure made of basil stone. This temple also faced the tyranny of Aurangzeb and almost all of the structure was destroyed. The roof, aangan and walls were rebuilt in recent times.
