The Shankar Maharaj Samadhi Math in Dhankawadi, Pune, is a cherished spiritual center, known for its vibrant energy and deep-rooted cultural significance. Situated on Pune-Satara Road, next to Karnataka Bank and near KK Market, the matha honors Shankar Maharaj, a revered saint believed to be a divine incarnation in the lineage of Lord Dattatraya. Visitors come here not only for spiritual blessings but also for the tranquility that the place offers, making it a must-visit for both devotees and those seeking peace of mind. Upon arrival, the positive ambiance of the matha is palpable, and many feel an immediate sense of calm and reverence. The matha is thoughtfully designed, with wheelchair accessibility and helpful attendants who ensure that all visitors, including those with mobility challenges, can comfortably navigate the premises. For instance, if you are visiting with an elderly or physically challenged family member, the matha offers wheelchairs and assistance throughout the temple. Moreover, they provide priority access for one accompanying person, allowing for a smooth and dignified experience even during peak times. The matha’s aarti takes place daily at 12 pm, and this is often the busiest period due to the distribution of prasad, which typically consists of a tasty khichdi. This khichdi, which is prepared as an offering to the deity, is much loved by the visitors. If you visit on a weekend or Thursday, expect large crowds and a lively atmosphere, but also consider that the place might be a bit quieter on weekdays for those seeking a more peaceful experience. One unique tradition here is the offering of cigarettes, which is particularly striking. Devotees seeking to overcome addictions like smoking can symbolically ignite a cigarette as an offering, signifying their desire to quit. A designated area outside the main temple is set up for this purpose, emphasizing the temple’s inclusive and supportive approach towards personal growth and wellness. Inside the matha, there are numerous smaller temples, including shrines to Gurudev Datt, Hanuman, and Sri Swami Samarth, creating a rich spiritual environment. The main sanctum is marked by a tall golden pillar topped with a saffron flag, adding to the temple's sense of grandeur and holiness. Around the matha grounds, there are beautifully crafted statues of animals and warkaris, which further add to the place’s visual appeal and cultural richness. The matha also has peaceful spots for sitting, meditating, or simply reflecting on life, making it a sanctuary for personal introspection. A particularly special feature of the matha is its Thursday morning meditation (ध्यान) sessions at 8 am. Many visitors find these sessions transformative, providing an opportunity for spiritual practice and deep relaxation. For those who revere Shankar Maharaj and his guru, Swami Samarth, the matha holds additional meaning. Devotees experience a connection to Shegaon, known as the center of Swami Samarth’s legacy, and feel a continuity of tradition and blessings. Parking at the matha is convenient, though it can be challenging on crowded days like weekends and Thursdays, especially for four-wheelers. Fortunately, there is ample parking for two-wheelers along the adjacent roads. Despite the hustle and bustle, the matha retains a serene environment, and the entire experience leaves visitors feeling revitalized and blessed. The Shankar Maharaj Samadhi Math is more than a temple; it is a place of healing, a space for spiritual awakening, and a powerful sanctuary of peace. For anyone in Pune, a visit to this sacred space is highly recommended to experience its calming, divine presence and the unique traditions that make it so special.

This temple built in 1947 by Bapurao Rudra and located on Satara Road follows the Nath tradition. On April 24, 1947 Sadguru Shankar Maharaj, a saint of the Nath sampradaya (tradition), attained samadhi (communion with heavenly abode), and his resting place was turned into a matha. The temple is aligned on a south-north axis. At the entrance is a spacious sabha mandapa (assembly hall) where devotees sit and offer prayers after darshan (viewing). It has a yajna kund (ritual space where prayers are offered in front of a fire) in the centre. The matha is very popular in Pune and a large number of devotees visit it on special occasions. There are several sacred and ancient trees like audumbar, banyan, pimpal, bael, and sandalwood in the premises of the temple, as well as an ancient well that is believed to be permanently filled with water by the grace of Maharaj. In front of the samadhi temple is a south-facing temple of Lord Hanuman, and behind that is a temple of Lord Dattatreya.
