Nestled in the eastern hills of Ilam district, Shree Antu is one of Nepal’s most underrated yet mesmerizing travel destinations. Famous for its panoramic views of sunrise, lush tea gardens, and cultural richness, Shree Antu offers a perfect retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
A Sunrise to Remember Perhaps the most iconic feature of Shree Antu is its sunrise viewpoint. At an altitude of around 2,328 meters, the hilltop offers a breathtaking view of the sun rising above the clouds, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and gold. On a clear day, visitors are also treated to majestic views of the Kanchenjunga range, the third-highest mountain in the world. The experience is tranquil and unforgettable — a true feast for the soul and senses.
Tea Gardens and Terraced Beauty Shree Antu is part of Ilam, Nepal’s tea capital. The undulating hills carpeted in green tea bushes are a sight to behold. Walking through these gardens, breathing in the fresh mountain air mixed with the faint scent of tea leaves, offers a meditative experience. Many of the local tea estates also offer guided tours where visitors can learn about the tea production process — from plucking leaves to processing and tasting. Tea lovers will especially appreciate the chance to sample locally produced varieties like Ilam Orthodox Tea and Antu Green Tea.
Cultural Harmony One of Shree Antu’s strengths is its rich cultural diversity. The region is home to indigenous communities such as the Limbu, Rai, and Lepcha, each contributing to the area’s vibrant traditions. Homestay experiences are widely available, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in local life. Guests are often treated to traditional meals, dances, and storytelling sessions, all in the warmth of village hospitality. This cultural exchange enriches the visit and adds depth to the overall experience.
Eco-Tourism and Sustainability Shree Antu is a prime example of sustainable, community-based tourism. The homestays and small lodges are often run by local families, ensuring that tourism revenues support the community directly. Efforts are made to keep the region clean, preserve its natural beauty, and promote responsible tourism. Visitors are encouraged to travel mindfully, respect local customs, and minimize waste.
Activities and Exploration Beyond sunrise viewing and tea tasting, there are numerous activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking trails lead through forests, meadows, and villages, each offering its own charm. Bird watchers will also find plenty to admire — the region is home to a variety of species, including the colorful Himalayan monal. Cycling and nature walks are popular, and during spring and autumn, the landscape becomes even more vibrant with blooming rhododendrons and clear skies.
Getting There While Shree Antu is remote compared to more commercial destinations, it’s relatively accessible. From Bhadrapur or Biratnagar airports, travelers can take a vehicle to Ilam Bazaar and then on to Shree Antu. The journey itself is scenic, winding through hills and tea gardens, offering beautiful vistas at every turn.
Final Thoughts Shree Antu is not just a place to visit — it's a place to feel. The tranquil environment, combined with the warmth of the local people, creates a truly enriching travel experience. It’s a destination where time seems to slow down, encouraging mindfulness and a deep appreciation for nature and culture.

Read moreIt was a tiny bit of a hassle to get there but it was worth it. The pond itself didn't catch my attention to be fairly honest but the views surrounding it was astounding.
Small hills of tea shrubs were honestly maintained well and the tree on top was a cherry on top. Photos are more than allowed to be clicked even inside and amongst the tea bushes.
I personally love that the tea trees are conditioned to maintain a seat for people and as such it offers offers for a chance to take great photographs.
Talking about accomodations, i believe i saw hotel or a restaurant to stay. Horse riding is available but i am not sure if you can be granted with boating access.
It is a nice place to visit not far from Antu tower and i would only consider the road access as an improvable point...
