A Must-Visit for a Unique Spiritual ExperienceThe "Golden Lizard Temple," officially known as Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple, is a truly remarkable and ancient site in Kanchipuram. While the temple's main deity, Lord Vishnu, is the primary focus of worship, the golden and silver lizards on the temple ceiling are what draw countless visitors for a unique ritual.According to a legend, two disciples of a sage were cursed to become lizards for a small mistake. They were later granted salvation by Lord Vishnu, but their mortal forms remained on the temple roof. It is believed that by touching these golden and silver lizards, along with the carvings of the sun and moon, one can be cleansed of their sins and freed from the ill effects of a lizard falling on their body. The ceiling is also said to be made of gold and silver. The temple itself is a magnificent example of Dravidian architecture, with intricate carvings, a vast complex, and a serene atmosphere. The experience of queuing up to touch the lizards is a memorable one, as it brings you closer to the temple's ancient mythology and cultural significance. This is a must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of spiritual devotion, historical grandeur, and a truly one-of-a-kind experience.Tips for your visit:Go early: The temple can get very crowded, so an early morning visit is best to avoid long queues.Be prepared: The queue for the lizards can be long, so carry water and be patient.Respectful attire: As with any temple, dress modestly, covering your...
Read moreLong ques. Not so tourist friendly. All the details in Tamil language. We were literally not sure which dieties we were visiting. Management is not good. Entry and exit points are the same due to which there can be stampede. There are no temple staff to guide the tourists. They just show the que without giving the details of the dieties we are visiting. We have to visit ammanavara temple first for which there was 45 mins que. After that we were in que for visiting yoga narasimha temple. After this we stood for visiting Perumal varadaraj Darshan, which took almost 45 mins. This que is very poorly managed. Entry and exit points are the same. Even though the temple management can segregate the points they haven't done that. Again no english or hindi sign boards to instruct which way to go to see Golden Lizard temple. After visiting Perumal temple we just exited without visiting Lizard temple. However we asked one family who told us how to go to golden Lizard temple. Again from exit points we entered back perumal swamy temple to visit Golden Lizard temple. Noted very small que lanes and with the overwhelming heat and humidity it was very difficult to get the Darshan done. Somehow with 2 kids we managed to get the Darshan after almost an hours wait. Nobody wore any masks. Covid appropriate behaviour was absolutely missing. No fans or cooling systems in place. One suggestion that we can provide is to allow the people to visit the dieties they want to visit. Instead of forcing them to enter all the...
